You should be aware that there are a number of strategies available for poker players to use in events and poker tourneys. While there is no fool proof system for winning poker hands, playing in certain ways can help players to win more than they lose which is obviously going to be of interest to poker players. Some players will think that developing strategies will be too rigid for their style of play or too much effort what they consider to be a fun activity but if you are genuinely serious about winning at online poker, it may not be a bad thing to develop these skills.
One of the most popular strategies for online poker players would have to be the M Calculator for poker. This concept, the M Concept, was first conceived by Dan Harrington and it is based around informing players of what their situation is with respect to a poker tournament. Knowing how long you can last on your current chip levels or status can be good information for a player and it can definitely influence the way that they decide to play for the rest of the tournament.
What zone will you be in?
There are a number of zones that players can be in and if they are in the green zone, they are doing well. This is a comfort zone and if you are able to play premium hands and playing conservatively, you should find that you can stay in the game for a good length of time. The next zone is the yellow zone, which isn’t a bad place to be but obviously the green zone would be better. Some players see this zone as a cue to start playing more aggressively in the hope of winning your way into the green zone. Of course, depending on your personality, you may consider it more sensible to minimise your potential losses by playing conservatively and hoping that you do not dip into the next zone.
Red means danger, even in poker
This is the orange zone and if you are here, alarm bells should definitely be sounding. You will likely find that you check and call on a more regular basis than betting and this is down to the fact that your stack is not enough to allow you to bet at a level that will chase opponents out of a hand. However, the orange zone is better than the red zone. In this zone, players will sense your weakness and attempt to call you in order to eliminate you. It would be sensible to wait for a King or Ace before you move all in when you act. Big plays can often give you the chance to double, triple or even quadruple which could see you back on business.
The red zone is bad but the dead zone is worse and in this situation, you are relying on luck to get you out of the hole. If Lady Luck is a good mistress for you, you may just find you remain in the tournament.
