Daily Hand Quiz

DHQ Will Return With New Quizzes January 3rd.

Happy Holidays!

Game type: Full Tilt Deep Stack NL Tournament
Your image: You’re fairly new to the table
Stage of tourney: 74 / 222 remain
Avg stack: 8500
Misc notes:
Your hand: A♣J♣

The setup: You’ve been dwindling after losing a race a few orbits ago with AK. You were moved to this table about 8 hands ago and haven’t played a hand when the following situation comes up.

You’re dealt AJ in the BB. The first two seats fold, and then Player C raises to 860. Player D flat calls and it folds to you.

You’ve seen Player C make a couple of raises, but you’ve seen nothing from Player D so far. What’s your play?

I’m shoving.
It’s not perfect, but with our M < 5 we need to make a stand very soon and frankly this spot isn’t all that bad.
Player C has raised ‘a couple times’ over as few as 8 hands, so I’m putting him on a fairly wide range and expect to have some fold equity even if we’re giving him 3:1 on his call. There’s also a chance he’ll take us on with a hand that we are dominating.
Player D has oddly flatcalled a pf raise for 1/4 of his stack with 5 players left to act. He’s either trapping with some premium hand, or just really spewy.

I think we have been sitting idle with our short stack long enough to make our raise seem like we genuinely hit a premium hand. Get it in now that we still have a smidgen of fold equity to our stack.

W/o a read on Player D it is close, but I’ll wobble to the RAI side. My thinking is that TT+ and AQ+ are likely 3-betting Player C, who I believe will fold to our raise. We may be behind but need to take a shot w/ our short stack.

Folding is ok, but we are well below avg stack; not sure if we’ll see another decent hand.

Calling is the worst option as you invest 35% of stack, and play the hand oop against 2 players.

On a side note – Happy Holidays to all the regs! I have learned a bunch from your posts.

Likewise on both accounts!

i dont know…my first instinct was to jam, but then i settled on taking the discount and seeing a flop. the thing is, ive been in this spot so many times, shoved in and found myself up against a/q or a/k and bounced. if we miss a flop and check/fold, we’ll have to move in in the next orbit, but 8 bbs should be enough to fold out junk hands that might be tempted to call for the knockout.

another option is a stop n go, which i still think is better than jamming here. at least we give missed hands an excuse to get out rather than roll the dice.

City, I’m sure we all have been in this spot so many times, and my guess would be that our memory is highly selective in terms of which particular cases we remember. It is indeed painful to put your stack in with sub-premium holding and then get busted by a dominant hand, so these occasions tend to linger in our minds. At the same time, when we shove over loose LP opener plus a lone caller and they both subsequently fold, it is really just another nondescript hand that is wiped from our conscious memory a minute later.

The problem with stop&go is that we’d be betting all in 1600 into 3200 at flop, which is not much of an excuse for anyone to get out. M=5 is a push-or-fold territory for a good reason :) .

My math has it at 1800 into 2900 which should be plenty to convince a missed hand to fold. Also m<5 is shove fold territory but that doesn’t necessarily mean this is the place to shove. A stop and go is a type of shove and just as a general point shoving AJ into strength preflop has a lot of potential for turing out bad.

Keep in mind also that this is a 3-handed pot. Forget about fold equity on a stop & go. I’d imagine a good bunch of tourney players are already familiar with stop & go. You’re going to get called here with any pair any AK no matter what.

Ugghhhh… I think this is a shove/fold decision. I like the stop n go idea from CityBorn, but after calling I’m not sure we have enough chips left to get the opponents off drawing hands.
A shove will effectively work as a squeeze play, so if we’re lucky we can take down the pot or at least get heads up.
We’re going to quickly run out of chances to get our chips in while it still matters. I’ll take my chances shoving now with my fingers crossed…

Best wishes to you all for the upcoming holidays. May your pots be large and your cards be live.

shove, then walk to the fridge and open a cold one.

Stop n go is tempting but I don’t believe that a shove after the flop (given our stack size) is going to get them off their hands unless they missed entirely.

Shove it all in – you’re not going to get many better spots and even if you do it might be too late. AJs with a chance to treble your stack? It’s got to be worth a go!

We must shove this given that we are very, very shortstacked. Actually I think shoving ATC is +EV here, but I must add that AJs it probably the worst hand to do it, since our opponents calling range totally dominates us. I’d be more happy to have 89s or 66 here.
