See hold on, this kind of shit is just so bizarre to me. Like when I see people do this, my first reaction isn’t even whether I’m gonna call, its usually like “what are you expecting to happen here dude”. Here is a guy, who has over 6k in chips, has absolutely zero reason to be desperate or out of line, and this is what he does.

One of my rules, is that I generally try to stay away from going to war against stupidity. Unless I have some kind of clue about what the reasons behind the stupidity might be, I usually will avoid it. And since here, I have no reads, which is all I’d basically count on, I’m not going to get involved, even though my gut is saying call. But I have to be careful. On face value, I’d say there’s no way he’s doing this with a bigger pair than mine, and if he just has high cards, I am not the one that has to improve. A pair barely smaller than mine may work. This 99 hand is just perfectly on that border for beating his range. But hold on. With zero read, this guy could be the type that doesn’t know how to play JJ utg. Maybe this is the only move he knows. He could be that he doesn’t know how to play AK or TT from early position. Maybe he’s getting stupid with AA. Who knows. But this is where having a read is crucial. This entire call is based on whether this is the kind of guy that does or doesn’t know how to play jacks utg. From there you just have to make a decision, but this is about the only information you can possibly use in any way at all, I really don’t know how any other possible read info could be of benefit, as this is such a strange unique situation that rarely happens.

Ok, beyond the face value now, and looking at circumstances, this being 6k, I have 10k, middle stage tournament, and zero read. I’m gonna pass here. This guy may think that is the best way to use his 6k, but I think my 6k can do better. Nothing makes my jaw tighten like having to fold 99 on the button, but blind investments like this going to war against stupidity with zero read are absolutely not in my arsenal of winning tournaments. There is no math or odds to consider here, we are calling all-in or not based on specific reads and info, and we need reads to do it because this scenario is so different and odd. But we have none. So this would just be blind war. No thanks.

Laugh, then sigh and fold. Let’s invest in predictable scenarios where logic works and things make sense. Forget these nonsense plays.

Alot of players just like to shove all in once the blinds gets big and there’s ante, don’t they? I don’t know for sure without a read but I suspect the most likely range we’ll see is one of 99-JJ AQ/AK, just not wanting the play the flop. So I’m folding.

Snapfold. We have a decent stack and no reason to risk two thirds of it when there is a very decent chance we are crushed or flipping. It could be 88 or something, but I am not willing to take such a risk to find out.

I would call with JJ+ here only.

It’s also worth considering that there are two short-medium stacks left to act behind us, and if either of them call we are going to be in pretty dire shape.

Not so much though. They’re not gonna call all-in just because they’re getting 3:1. They have to wake up with a total monster. And if they do, no matter, they were getting involved regardless of whether we were or not. Our play will in no way influence anything they weren’t going to do already.

Suck to fold 99 from the button, but without a read I can’t find a reason to call what should be a flip at best.
Silver lining here is that we’ve identified a player at our table that we can likely exploit in a future hand – stash away the info and use it later.

Two options: It’s either a very bold/dumb bluff with a marginal hand or its a very bold/imaginative value bet with AA or KK hoping someone will put him on a bluff and look him up. I’m not going to pay to find out given there’s bound to be a better spot to take that 6k chips from him.

Secondly, even if we’re ahead here the blinds could have us crushed or he could suck out on us.

I’m chuckling to myself about this amazing game we all play and mucking my hand. Odds are he gets too clever for his own good and we felt him about 10 hands later anyway.
