Daily Hand Quiz

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: $162 freezeout, no limit MTT PokerStars
Stage of tourney: Early stages
Your image: TAG
Opponent’s image: No strong read
Your hand: K♣K♥

The setup: You’re in the very early stages of the nightly $162 on PokerStars when the following hand comes up.

The table folds to you on the button with KK. You raise it to 3x and the SB calls. The BB folds. You flop pretty safe:

9♦5♠T♦

You bet 180 after the SB checks. The SB calls and the turn brings the 8c. Now the SB leads for 230. You raise it to 690 and the SB tanks before making it 1150, a min 3 bet.

What’s your play? If you call, what’s your river plan?

Call.

I don’t like it but I think you have to call. Our opponent may have hit the straight, two pair or set of eights but they’re just as likely value betting A10.

It’s also entirely possible this is just a bluff. They’ve got the stack to make at play at folding out a TAG here because an 8 makes a pretty effective scare card and there is no cheaper bluff than a min re-raise.

The problem here is that calling commits you to calling a lot of river cards but I just don’t see how you can get away from KK in this spot. Shame we don’t have a read on the player despite them already winning a number of pots judging by their stack.

I’ll reluctantly call and hope to check the riv. Although TAG hero open-raised, the turn r-r told v that we have something. V leads for about 2/3 pot after the 8c hits, so I’d give credit for 98, J10, QJ, 88, overcards, and draws. Their 3-bet gives us 5-1 to call, so they could be trapping or still drawing. With out a read, I’ll go with the latter, believing that a set or straight would protect their hand via a larger raise.

Easiest fold ever;not even a semidecent player at this stakes is raising on a draw.HE is doing it just for value., not with top pair that is the only hand in villain´s range that we are beaten.

Fold,fold.

Fold. They have told us we are beat or they are not going away cheaply. Do you really want to get all your chips in the middle this early? If we call this turn bet, we have invested over half of our stack with a vulnerable overpair and are pot committed. We could potentially be drawing dead and the King of diamonds may not be an out if villan is on a diamond draw. Not to mention any river card 6 through Queen or a diamond will compliment the board. If they are that determine to win this pot on a bluff or hand that does not have our overpair beat, more power to them. The ability to do well in tourneys is too make great calls and folds. This is one of them spots. I fold.

This hand is a bit tricky. Many players will make a move here. A lot of times a raiser on the button wont get as much respect especially when the table folds to the them. It’s very possible that you are going for a blind steal. The SB may also strongly believe that you completely missed the flop and you are just C-betting the flop.

I would prob call here and hope I didn’t run into a set or a straight.

It’s easy to loose a lot of money in situations like this, and I have so myself, you raise from late position with a premium pair, and get called by one of the blinds, you dont flop an overpair to your premium pair and a betting war begins; you keep thinking he has nothing, he was in the blinds, and he invariably shows a ragged two pair to win the pot, here, i think he easily has two pair or better, I doubt he would have reraised the turn with a draw, he would hjave either called or shoved, for maximum fold equity, and no-one in theier right mind plays A10 here this strongly, this could just be a random play, b ut in most instances here you are either up against two pair (most likely) a low set (less likely) or a strait (even less likely), there is an argument for calling here, in that if you are against two pair you have 8 outs to beat him at the river, and u r getting 6 to 1 to call, almost the amount you need, the trouble is you have no implied odds, since i the bored pairs, you will not be able to tell if he has made a full house, or if u have drann out on him with kings up, (you wont be able to use ur posiiton to get anything, since he can easily check his full hopinh to trap, and you have no good read on him at the moment), also you could be drawing dead to a made strait, and calling here may force u to call a big bet on the river….so now the odds dont seem so good.
This is a easy fold.

Fold – either you are losing or the SB is not very good (in which case you will get him later).

Pretty shocked to see the amount of votes for call here, I think this is a pretty easy fold. Julian summed it up pretty nicely.

The hero in this hand is actually me :p

There was a pretty good argument that my raise on the turn was bad too, but I figured it gave me a good amount of information to what his peculiar lead out meant.

I think the turn raise is fine in response to what could be perceived as a blocking bet.

The voting results are not correct. There were about 100 votes at the time of my first post. Probably a hangover from another quiz.

Did you supply the quiz? Why is there no read on the table chip leader? Unless you have just moved tables to not have a read on the chip leader is very odd.

I understand a lot of people will fold here, but I can’t see how its possibly an easy fold. To ditch KK just because the turn brings three to a straight? Or because we’re worried about random two pair hands?? I guess thats scared TAGs for you.

Understandable if it’s a tough fold. Unbelievable if it’s an easy fold.

BlueMustard Reply:

There simply aren’t any hands he has that I beat that he makes this play with. It was probably 15 hands into the tourney, so no specific reads on the chip leader either.

I didn’t supply the quiz, but I posted this hand in the MTT strategy forum a few days ago asking for advice on the correct play after his 230 bet lead

This is ugly but we need to fold this. The best hand we could hope is that he have AJ of diamonds but most likely he’s got two pairs or more and afraid that we are drawing to straight or flush and thus makes a big bet.

Better fold and wait for a better chance since we still have a decent stacks also.
