Daily Hand Quiz

Game type: 1/2 No Limit Cash on Poker Stars
Your image: LAG
Opponent’s image: A little fed up
Your hand: 9♦9♥

This hand is from our archives. View the original quiz and comments here

The setup: You’ve been very aggressive in late position preflop so far at this table. While your stack has floated up and down, you’ve won your money by picking up a lot of pots and lost it on some nasty drawouts. You’ve had a couple of confrontations with the BB.

This hand the table folds to you in the CO and you raise to 3x. The table folds to the BB, who makes it $26 to go. He has three bet you a couple of times and played relatively straightforward on the flop as far as you can tell. You call. The flop comes:

7♥7♦7♣

The BB checks. What’s your play?

What we said then: I wouldn’t be surprised if the BB decided to get tricky on this flop with a strong hand. He knows you’re aggressive, and he’s set you up for a trap by playing straightforward so far. He also might think you’re tilty since you’ve lost on drawouts.

I like the check. It keeps the pot small, maintains the value of your position and should force him to play a little more obviously on the turn.

The one problem with the check is that you’ll often end up spending more on the hand when you’re behind than you would if you bet and folded to a CR. I think that’s balanced by the value you pick up from inducing bluffs and the money you save when your bet is just called as opposed to raised on the flop, since you often have to make an additional river call when the hand plays out that way.

What actually happened: You checked. The turn brought an 8. The BB checked and you checked back. The river brought a jack. He fired $44 and you called. He showed KQs and you won the pot.

i bet over half the pot. I wanted to either win it now or fold. based on what happened that would have cost me $44.

Let’s check and play the position game. I think he may have a bigger pair but he thinks I might check the bigger pair to induce him to bluff. This brain game can save me some money if he has a bigger pair while it can give me some money if he thinks his Ace-high might be good.

I’d rather bet (the pot) now whilst it’s cheap and fold to a reraise rather than letting a higher card hit the turn and not knowing if I’m calling for value or being taken to value town.

I check. I would not be folding to a check/raise but I’d rather not stack off just yet. There’s no need to “win it now”. Let’s use our position and see if we can’t get some value for our hand later.

Keep the pot small. If he’s behind at best he’s drawing to 6 outs, so we’re either way ahead or way behind. We have good showdown value and a nice bluff catcher (which in and of itself gains us value on our hand).

I voted check. Agree with the comments – keep the pot small as this is not a hand you want to stack off. Yes, o-cards are likely, however v tends to play straight-forward p/f and hero has position.

I’m tempted to lead here. I can take it now, fold to a CR, and always check-check the turn (and maybe river) for pot control. I probably bet about 2/3 pot to get overcards to fold.

6 outs is plenty, and I dont want him finding them if thats what hes looking for. If I check I also have no idea where I stand when overcards come. Checking behind here is basically committing to call his turn and river bets since Ive asked him to bluff even if he misses. Given my image and his frustration….I definitely lead here and do my best to read if hes stubbornly calling with high cards, raising with an overpair, or folding and getting more steamed which has a side benefit for future pots even if we lose some value here. Tilted players are usually easier to read, lets find out whats happening.

I’m betting. How much would dependt on how much it takes to have him fold. I don’t mind picking up now, but I don’t mind giving him bad odds. I’d say he’s most likely to have two overs (simply because there are more of those than over pairs) what would the play be if an A, K or Q hits the turn? We’d have to fold to most bets. Given opp infite odds to hit one of those cards is just wrong.

Check? You do not check here for the very reason that happened. You give free cards and get out drawn. Lead out and find out if you can get the pot right here. ESPECIALLY once he checks the turn. The terrible thing about weakness is you lose pots like this. Your chips are your tools and sometimes you have to use them to win the pot before an ugly cards comes and then you have even worse decisions to make.

I bet out big and make it look like a steal, if he is holding an ace or a small pair, he is likely to call. Letting him have a free card is insane, any card over a 9 puts you under pressure.

Probe bet, check, check-call.

Chris is right, you got really lucky that the turn was an 8 and not a T-A. That’s after the fact anyway.

agreeing with chris, this is the best position to make a move. we know he doesn’t have QQ+ from pf but surely A10+. only worry should be TT (maybe JJ, but even that seems wierd), and you’d rather find out now than down the road, especially since you will have a lot more to think about should a >9 card pop out. lead with 2/3+ of pot.

i thought he was just trying to buy it preflop
