Daily Hand Quiz

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: 2/4 deep cash full ring, Full Tilt Poker
Your image: A little loose
Opponent’s image: TAG
Your hand: Ac 9c

The setup: You’re an hour into this full ring sessions and have had some ups and downs, but no large hands that might have left a very strong impression on your opponents. This hand you’re dealt A9s in the SB. A player in EP limps, the player to his left raises to $18, a MP player calls, you call and the BB folds. You flop top two:

6♣A♠9♦

You and the limper check and the raiser bets $50. The MP player folds, you call and the limper folds. The turn brings the Q♥. You check and the raiser fires $125 into about $175.

What’s your play? Also, discuss your plan for the river in the comments.

I don’t really see a reason to raise here. You don’t have to defend against many rivers, and it’s unlikely you’ll get a worse hand to call. I’m calling and considering a fold if they fire another barrel on the river, as it will start to look like I might have stumbled into a real cooler.

What actually happened: You called and the river came the Td. You checked and your opponent bet $300. You called and were shown 66 for a flopped set.

I raise and simply go from there on my guts. If i flat on the turn i feel committed to call another bullet on the river and i dont know how much hes gonna bet, might as well raise and maybe fold or call his all in if it does happen.

I don’t see any reason to raise either, his line is very strong with no draws out there – HE doesn’t need to protect against draws and I don’t see any other reason for him to bet the turn with a strong ace (AK, AJ) after getting called on a multiway flop. Unfortunately strong aces, maybe 78s and total air is all that we can beat here

After all I call turn. I plan to call a reasonable river bet, but fold to a shove. I may also fold J or K rivers depending on gut feelings. However preflop is a fold IMO, as we are out of position.

Great to see a cash quiz. First up I’m not a fan of calling a raise OOP after an early pos limper with a weak ace either but hey they’re suited! Secondly I like the check on the flop but not check-raising in this spot in a mult-way is just stupid. Now on the turn I think we just have to check call as we no longer have a big enough hand to check raise and we can’t fold two pair either. On the river I would check call anything up to a half pot bet due to pot odds but if opp bets at all (given the absence of any kind of draw) we are more than likely beat.

I voted raise … $250. The raise is more economic as I’d check-fold a riv bet. Based on the betting pattern, I estimate a v bet of $200-225, so calling both turn and riv would cost $325 – 350. I would fold to a turn r-r based on the TAG image. Not sure where the 2-pair stands. V could have AJ+ or a set. The TAG image tells me to rule-out draws like 7-8 or 9-10. I believe a set would bet a bit lighter, maybe 1/2 the pot(s).

I wouldn’t have called preflop. With this position, you’re looking for a flush or a couple of 9′s on the board and that’s about it.

I put the raiser on a high Ax, so the queen scared me. I’d probably fold to a large bet on the river.

I think check raising the flop would have been best. If he comes back at me with on the flop, I fold. If he bets the turn after my flop check raise, I’m probably folding.

Thanks for the cash quiz!

This is a tough spot….really depends on reads. Many opponents fire here with a big ace, so our two pair could be good. We could also be crushed…..I didnt like the queen at all, as now theres one less of the few hands I was originally beating. I dont think I can get away from this though. Im at least calling the turn and evaluating the river. A king or a jack might make me let go….a blank and I probably pay off under a pot sized bet.

First off, I really hate the preflop call. What are you looking for on the flop against a raise and a call. You’re almost certainly dominated preflop. Remember, this is a cash game. You can afford to tighten up and wait for more premium hands and/or situations. Second, I really hate the flop check/call. The only hand you really fear here is 66 (99 and AA are unliklely because there are only two out there). I think you need to raise for three reasons. First, you’re probably ahead, and you have an aggressive opponent. Second, you need to make sure he doesn’t really love his hand. His reaction to your check-raise should tell you what you need to know. Third, raising here is much cheaper than calling two bigger bets down the road.

Getting to this point, now a Q comes up, which means AQ also beats you. In addition, a K, J or T on the river makes an unlikely straight on the board, or more likely makes a better two pair. Your TAG opponent has just fired another 3/4 pot bet. If your red flags aren’t up now, it’s time to find a new game.

Having said that, your weak play has put you in a position where you almost have to pay off this bet and another (if a blank falls). Call and hope for a nine. You’ll have to seriously ask yourself if you want to call that big river bet. But again, weak play got you here. You should have folded pre-flop, raised post-flop and bet post-turn. Checking and calling all the way is big-time losing poker.

I voted raise, but I also probably wouldn’t have been playing this hand out of position with a raiser and a limper preflop.

I’m folding here. He’s playing aggressivly right from the flop. Meaning he has hit some thing big I’ll call until the turn, but if it gives another overcard to my nine. I trhowing this hand away.

I like CRing the flop.
As played, we put ourselves in a tough spot. Fold is too tight, call leaves us in the bad spot probably and a raise all but commits us.

I think I flat call the $125 and lead out $200 as a block bet. obv if something funny falls on the river(board pairs) we need to reevaluate and bet accordingly.

You can not raise at this point. If you wanted to raise you should have done it at the flop to find out where you are at. Afterward you bet out at the turn. By check calling, you now dont know where your hand stands. He could easily be holding AQ or so and not hit two pairs. You can only check-call until the river to maybe possibly win or minimize your losses if you got coolered.

I can’t believe people think our hero’s pre-flop OOP call is legitimate here. A9 is such a trouble hand. You might as well have J2 because either way you have to catch perfect. Pop it up if you think it’s a steal or toss it. You are going to get WAY better hands and position to play. You just lost 300 bucks instead of 2.

But let’s say I made the donk play pre-flop and am now stuck on the turn. I call here to keep it small and prepare to fold on the river. I’m worried about all hands that can beat my aces up at this point because my opponent is TAG.
