Tourney / NL Rebuy

Top pair out of position, no limit tournament

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: $30 rebuy tournament, FTP
Stage of tourney: In the money
Your image: Active
Opponent’s image: No strong read
Your hand: A♦Q♦

The setup: You’ve been a little active in this rebuy tournament, but not quite so much since the bubble broke. You haven’t gone to a showdown in quite some time.

This hand you get AQs seven handed. After two folds, you raise to a bit over 2.5x. The button and BB call. You flop top pair:

Q♣4♥2♥

The BB checks. You bet about 11k into about 18k. The button thinks for a second and calls. The BB folds. The turn completes the heart draw:

8♥

You have about a pot-sized bet in your stack, and no strong read on your opponent. What’s your play?

Your bet on the flop, combined with the chips you had behind and the pot size, should have motivated any reasonable flush draw to show if they were going to continue to play, so I don’t think you need to be too worried about a flush draw. I also think KK and AA would have moved faster on this flop. So, that leaves a set or a hand you’re beating.

I’m not getting away from this hand. I also don’t want to let a random heart roll off on the river, so I’m going to bet to protect the hand. There’s also a chance that a hand like a pocket pair with a heart or a KQ with a heart might make a big mistake, decide they’re stuck to the pot and call.

What actually happened: You shoved and the button folded.

The pot is already bigger than our stack so any normal bet IMO commits us. If we bet small, say third pot we are getting 4 to 1 to call all in (and the bet failed to protect our hand against a fourth heart). If we bet half pot we are getting 5 to 1 to call all in. Without a good read I couldn’t be certain enough that opp had it to fold at these odds. I would therefore shove to protect my hand and hope to be called by a weaker Q. If opp has the made flush then so be it but I’m not checking this one over.

Hero’s bet size on the flop eliminated pot odds for a flush draw. If the v flopped a set would have heard by now. Agree with staff on AA and KK. Only danger I see is v holding 88. Can’t check here and risk another heart on the riv. A small bet may give odds for a call, so I voted “Bet large”.

The board has got to get a little / lot uglier than this before I’m tossing TP /TK after building a pre flop pot greater than one third my stack….Bet big!

I also voted bet big, all in.

Sure the flush migth be there, bur we are pot-committed and likely to have the best hand.

I disagree with samo2’s argument that villain could not have a flush because of bad odds on flop. Villain never flatcalls a bet with a draw for direct odds, but for implied - and perhaps for the chance to bet us off the hand when he misses. Though pretty slim, the implied odds would be there for him. However, as the staff pointed out, the EV for villain to shove on flop with a flushdraw is higher, so most villains would have done that with that holding. Hence we are more likely to be ahead.

Yeah, time to ship it in. Sometimes you’re going to get unlucky and meet up with a flush (most likely if villain has the Q of hearts), but most of the time you’re going to pick up the pot right now. I think probably 80-90% of the time you’re way ahead, and any bet commits you. Shove and see what happens.

I voted check-puke, but was forced to adjust and click check-call since that wasnt an option. I think villain could EASILY have a flush. So we c-bet a little over half the pot on the flop, its completely believable that he could A) just be floating the flop, trying to test whether we have something or will show weakness on the turn B) have played a flush draw C) have a queen, not sure where he stands.

Since Im ahead of most of those and fading what is likley 9 outs at most to the river, Im opting to avoid risk of elimination if hes got the flush, in exchange for giving him a chance to catch up. If he bets behind here, Ill puke, and decide whether to call. I think Id probably call since he would likely do this with either nothing (floated the flop, testing us, planning to steal if we show weakness) or if he has a Q, now figuring hes best and not wanting US to catch a heart. This is a ridiculous situation, and it entirely depends on reads, but Im doing all I can to minimize the damage. If he forces my hand, Ill put it in, otherwise, its a nice enough pot, Im leaving it be for the moment.

Its moments like these, when you ship it in and get called by the flush, that make you remember all the pros you watched on TV who didnt do that, survived, and went on to win.

I mean…the flush is an option but with your opponents stack he would’ve probably semi-bluff raised a flush draw on the flop, he has the chips for it, and if hes going to play the hand it’s the right play every time. For that reason and that reason only I’d put him on some sort of weak queen or maybe even a 4 or just ace-high…I’m putting my chips in here.

Also @ _CityBorn_

I’m not sure a lot of pros would get away from this with more than their stack in the middle…maybe if a player with less chips who wasn’t on the button made a flop call I’d be worried, but here I think you have the best hand more than 75% of the time, a good time to get your chips in.

I bet large here.

The pot is the size of my stack, and I’m not giving on it because a flush draw could have completed. I want to prevent opponent from winning the pot with a random heart. Hopefully if he has KQo he’ll call.
