Daily Hand Quiz

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: 100R on PokerStars
Stage of tourney: Nearing bubble
Your image: Fairly active
Opponent’s image: Little loose
Your hand: 9♦9♥

The setup: You’re nearing the bubble in the 109 rebuy on PokerStars. You are dealt 99 on the CO and raise to about 2.5x when the table folds to you. The button and SB folds, and a losing, somewhat loose player in the BB calls. The flop comes:

8♠8♦K♥

The BB checks and you decide to check behind. The turn doesn’t change much:

6♠

The BB leads for 2400 into just about 8200.

What’s your play?

I like a small raise here, for a couple of reasons. First, it’s not out of line with how you’d play a king. Second, you get to charge draws a bit to continue playing.

Most importantly, the raise probably won’t cost you any more than calling another bet on the river will – in fact, it might cost you less. It’s pretty unlikely that your opponent will three bet you here without a king, and it’s fairly unlikely that they will lead the river without a king (or better). The downside to the raise is that you don’t get another bluff from your opponent on the river, but again, I don’t think that’s happening all that often.

So, calling twice and raising are probably about the same price, but raising lets you take control of the hand, defines your opponent’s hand more clearly, defends your hand and lets you put a little more money in while you’re ahead.

What actually happened: You raised to a little under 3x and the BB called. The river brought the 5s and the BB led for pot. You folded.

I think just calling is correct.

To me that 3-bet doesn’t look that unlikely.
He might know where we are at and do that even with a bluff or just a draw in which case we have to fold.
On top of that, 2400 is a suspicious bet in my opinion: he might have a real hand there.

Call him down, keep the pot small.

I voted call to keep the pot small so that can call a river bet and still have a good stack but I think a small raise is best as opponent could fold right there and if called we would likely be able to check behind on the river saving ourselves some chips if we are behind.

2400 smells for me… call and reevaluate on the river.

I like a flat call. Im not afriad to make a tough decision on the river, and I think its worse to risk having this hand escalate exponentially here if we raise with mediocre holdings. Our opponent is a little loose, could easily have a king or an 8, or be playing for a straight or flush, and we wont really know if he hits it if it goes to the river. Now he fires a big bet into a big pot, and were in trouble. If you call here, you keep the pot small and hes unlikely to fire anything other then a 2/3 ish bet regardless of the river. I believe in the poker philosophy that says winning players play “small pots for small hands, big pots for big hands”.

I voted call, but do like the Staff’s position. Decided to lean toward being thrifty w/99. If the v has nothing, my turn call could be perceived as strong and we may check down the riv, which is fine for me. If the V is strong, they will likely lead on the riv and I would not call. I save on the call vs. the 3bet.

i always call in situations like these also.. i guess it might be the wrong play but calling means you have SOMETHING so hes not gonna bet the river unless he has something too or put you on complete air

I would call to the river… a better hand than yours is gonna call a re raise so whats the point?

Our call looks like a decent king (KJ-KQ) that are planning to call all the way. I don’t think he leads out on the river without a king. The draws? I don’t see many of thems with this board.

sorry, but I folded. I thought his call of my preflop raise was sufficient to think he had a hand. when he checked on the flop I felt he was checking in hopes I would bet so he could CR. I felt he might have hit either trips or the king. More likely the K. I wasn’t going to chase the river, by throwing away 2400 just to see it, when I felt I was already beat. A kin to folding a high pr. to a higher pr. Guess I saved 2400 after the turn.
