Game type: $300 buy in no limit tournament, PokerStars
Stage of tourney: First level
Your image: None
Opponent’s image: No read
Your hand: J♣J♦

The setup: You’re still on the first level of this $300 tournament on PokerStars. You were moved to this table two hands ago and have no reads or history.

UTG folds and UTG+1 limps. You raise to 90. The player to your left calls, the CO calls and the limper calls. You flop an overpair:

9♣5♣3♦

The limper checks and you bet 210 into 390. The player to your left quickly raises to 780.

The other two players fold and it’s back to you. What’s your play?

Given a higher buy in, I think it’s safe to make a couple of assumptions about your opponent (safer than usual, anyhow). He’s probably calling your PF raise with a fairly narrow range in this spot, once that includes pairs, suited connectors, and maybe some weaker suited broadway.

You hold the Jc, so there goes JT, QJ, KJ and AJ. That leaves, realistically, AQc, KQc and ATc. The 9 is a club, so that knocks out T9, 98 and 97, leaving 76 and 87. There’s a small chance they could be defending a hand like T9 of some other suit, but it doesn’t seem too likely. Pairs likely to have flatted you are TT and down.

The short version: you’re only doing well against TT, 88 and 66. You’re a slight favorite or a flip against the various draws, and you’re drawing pretty thin against the set.

I don’t mind gambling when there are a good amount of weaker hands to pay me off, but this seems like a spot where you’re very rarely getting the money in all that good. You don’t have much invested, and calling out of position feels like asking for trouble. I vote fold.

What actually happened: You shoved and were called and shown a set of threes. The set held up and you were eliminated.

Nice analysis, first stage, out of position, not that strong a hand, too little invested… Easy fold.

This has set written all over it; fold.

i chose all in.. but didnt look at the buy in..
$20 and below it would be a shove, but at $300 our opponents are probably going to have a hand better than tp here

JJ is the hardest hand to play. Anytime you run into resistance with it and you are not short-stacked it best to give it up. You always want to be the agressor with it, otherwise get out.

Bad spot, a lot of players go broke here. Overpair is a good hand on this uncoordinated board, and very difficult to let go. Yes, the 300 dollar buy-in means you’re probably in trouble, but he could just as easily be assuming the flop missed you (via the same logic). You probably aren’t facing top pair or two-pair on this board. I would guess you’re either up against two overcards and a flush draw, a set, or a total bluff. Very tough spot. Personally, I would probably think about it for the full allotted time, and time would expire and fold for me.

The raise screams about a set frightened by the two clubs on board. Easy fold.

Also a pretty clear fold imo, wonder why so many voted otherwise.

If we were like 50BB deep we couldnt get away, but 150BB deep you just dont go broke with an overpair in a 300$ tour. Only a little invested, let it stay that way.

I think the most likely for that raise was a high outs project… of ourse 33 and 55 would also explain the pre flop call and certainly the raise as well…
without read of my opponent I have to raise here… (if those are not my usd300 on the buy in! :) )

I voted fold. I hate jacks out of position. This bet seemed like a set to me. This seems like a fold or shove, but why gamble your $300 buy in this early with jacks when there is a high probability he has a set?

I voted raise figuring the only hand that has me beat is a set, and thats only a small part of his range. Against the rest, Im ahead and would prefer to give him a chance to fold a draw. He doesnt have QQ, KK, or AA.

I couldve played it safe and folded, which is certainly a viable option, but I didnt. I suppose if it was my 300 up there, I mightve thought different about it. Not that Id think he has a set, but he might, and Im sure hes got at least one over with a club draw if not. I might just not want to get in so deep with a hand I dont really love.

Call and laugh as I watch a 5 come down on the turn and another 5 on the river.

Well.. I didn’t put him on a hand here and thus voted raise.. I lose

I eliminated QQ-AA very quickly here and figured I was against some kind of draw. Some days it would probably scream set at me, but not today. :(
