DailyHandQuiz

Game type: 500/1000 30k CAP no limit, Full Tilt
Your image: High stakes regular
Opponent’s image: A little wild
Your hand: A♥9♥

This hand is taken from actual gameplay at the 500 / 1000 no limit table on Full Tilt Poker. The hand took place between patatino and luvtheWNBA. You’ll be standing in for luvtheWNBA.

The setup: It’s pretty early in this cash game session of 500/1000 capped no limit. The maximum anyone can bet in a single hand is 30k.

Your opponent has already shown himself to be a bit wild. This hand you get A9 suited in the BB. The button folds and the SB makes it 3k. You call and flop top pair:

2♣A♠J♣

The SB bets 6k into 6k. You raise to 14k. He calls. The turn makes everything:

Q♣

Your opponent leads for the rest that he can bet, 13k.

What’s your play?

Is 3.5-1 enough to call this? It’s a tempting price for sure against someone who has already proven to be pretty wild.

Let’s assume when you are ahead that he’s got some pair / gut / flush combo - something like JT with the Tc. You’re about a 60-40 favorite there, and a 55-45 against a weaker ace with a club. Against a weaker ace with no club you’re a 70-30 favorite. Let’s just group it and say you’re roughly a 60-40 favorite when ahead. That means you show a profit of 23k when you call and you’re ahead.

When you call and you’re behind, you’re basically dead, so you lose 13k.

So, you basically have to be ahead a little more than 1 out of every 3 times to make this right. Seems like a fair chance against an aggressive opponent.

What actually happened: WNBA called and won when patatino showed Kc Qs.

Yeah, I liked the pot odds, but I would have had to seen just how wild villain was before calling. I mean, if we’re talking about calling all the way down with middle pair, then yes, I would have. However, there are a ton of hands that beat you. K-10, two clubs, QJ, A2 or a better ace and you’re all but dead. However, there’s no way I wouldn’t have noticed his tendency to bet out with KQo on that board earlier in the match, so I would have ended up calling.

So much of this is based on more intimate observations of his tendencies throughout the final table. Just saying “he’s wild” isn’t enough. You have to have seen what he’s done specifically in the past. As a final note, against anybody but a complete lunatic, I probably would have folded here.

The odds are tempting and holding an ace in a 3-way is good. That board is just too dangerous, however, so I’d fold despite the “wild” villain.

indeed this villain is preety wild after the cards are shown… I fold though, because even is hard to put him on flush (probably he would check raise or bet less than maximum) is not that hard to put him on a better hand than Hero.
tough decission even if we have full info of villain I think…

Thanks DHQ for the daily work!

Well said Rhycar. I enjoy reading these quizes but like Rhycar says…there are so many other factors that a good player would use to make a read on his opponent. Most of these quizes have such limited info which is understandable because it’s quite difficult to put in writing anything more specific than TAG, LAG, wild, etc. Still the quizes are a nice way to improve one’s game though.

I folded here put WNBA on to many hands and the pots odds compared to what I need to have to possibly have the best hand. Also my weak kicker against any A,10 - A,K is a major underdog.
