This hand is taken from actual gameplay on Full Tilt and took place between Patrik Antonius and pr1nnyraid. You’ll be standing in for pr1nnyraid

The setup: You’ve been getting the better of this high stakes match so far when the following hand comes up. You get TT in the SB and raise to 3k. Antonius calls and you flop an overpair:

5♥5♠4♣

Antonius checks, you bet 4k and he calls. The turn is the 9♥. Antonius checks. You bet 10,300 into 14,000. Now Antoinus check-raises you to 31,000.

What’s your play?

I choose d) Vomit in mouth.

It’s hard to put Antonius on a bigger overpair. It’s not hard to put him on a 5, and it’s also not hard to put him on some sort of weakish draw (maybe A3) or a smaller pair. I can’t really pick anything out from the preflop or flop action that narrows down the range.

So, what does your hand look like? From Antonius’ point of view, you probably are double-barreling with overs or have exactly the type of hand you really have - an overpair. There’s far more combinations of the former than the latter, so he probably has a pretty good motivation to be check-raising light here.

I honestly have no idea how to handle this spot, but with the money in the pot and the chance of being a decent favorite, I guess I raise to protect and cry a little when he calls.

What actually happened: pr1nny shoved and Antonius called, showing 95 for the turned boat. The river bricked and Antonius won a massive pot.

I agree with the staff, I pick d) vomit in mouth

I raise here, with a hope he folds, if not I know I’m behind, Antonious could easily be holding a 5 and slow playing it. Who knows, tough spot.

I would probably just go all passive after clearing up the sick, and just call and see a river.

If he checks on the river maybe going for the check-raise all-in, insta-check behind. Otherwise decide whether the 10’s are worth calling whatever bet he puts out there.

Thing is its heads up, and its high stakes so his range is pretty much any two cards. It comes down to a game of chicken and who gets lucky on the flop.

I saw this hand happen and was not surprised to see 95.

Sure is sick making that antonious chose to check raise with the second nuts. I could not fold and over pair in this spot heads up against such an aggressive opponent. Seeing as any face card will make me throw up again, and the fact the pot is now bigger than his remaining stack, may as well go all in hoping im ahead or at least have an out.

The turn bet was a mistake. Keep the pot small and let him take a stab at the pot at the river. Ok, I give him a chance to outdraw me, but
1- he may have only one overcard
2- he have to hit that overcard
3- he can’t be sure I’m not slowplaying a 5

So if he has something like A7 he has only 3 outs and he may think his ace high is good on the river while if he has a five we have lost the minimum.
After the check-raise on the turn the pot has become too big for just an overpair. Antonius is capable of a big river bluff if he smells weakness…

A5 was the first thing that popped in my mind when I started reading this; the check raise was a great play and would’ve made me push for sure with tens.

I’d raise. Unlikely that he is holding a 5 heads-up, so protect your hand. He is probably putting you on overcards and may have made a pair on the turn. You are a head. Wow - what a hand.

There really isn’t enough information here to make a good decision. Poker at this level is all about reading your opponent’s moods and rythms. There is a certain feel to a heads up match and you need to be able to tell when somebody is getting ready to play back at you, with or without a hand.

I voted fold. I don’t see anything wrong with the Turn bet either.

Against a very aggressive opponent, heads up with no other information, any player worth his weight in salt is going broke here.

Fold and vomit in your mouth. So many hands beat you here, and your re-draws are virtually non-existant. Once you got called after the flop bet, antonius had three possible sets of hands:

- Pocket pair
- Any hand containing a five
- random draw hand like 7-6

That’s a big range of hands to deal with (which is why you should have taken the free turn card). After you got check-raised, however, the range narrowed considerably. Now it’s extremely likely you are looking at trips and perhaps the full house. Also, pocket pair better than yours becomes more likely. I know I’m getting close to 3-1 on my money here, but the likelihood I’m drawing to two outs is just too great. Yes it’s a conservative fold, but the play supports it. I fold.

This screams fold, you have been getting the best of this and now C/R. Not a good time to get stubborn, he is hoping that you will believe that he is just being aggressive. With deep stacks like this calling heads-up with two cards is not all bad. When he Check/calls the flop has something, maybe the same as you. The C/R means he just got hit hard and you are very much behind.

There is another hand coming soon and you are probably still on the right side of the luck swing.

I voted raise but fold is equally likely for me. My actual option is (e), don’t play high stakes heads up, or any heads up for that matter, unless you’re top 2 in a tournament.

you don’t see anything wrong with the turn bet but then say that “There really isn’t enough information here to make a good decision”. So the turn bet put us in a tough spot after being raised. I think that if you don’t know how to respond to a raise, sometimes it’s better not to bet at all!
