The setup: You’re making your way toward the final table of this 45 man SNG when the following hand comes up.

The table folds to the CO, who had been playing quite tight in the early stages of the SNG but has seemed to really loosen up as his stack got to about 10 BBs. He open-shoves for 2k.

What’s your play? If you don’t call, what’s the minimum hand you’re willing to call with?

What we said then… You’d obviously prefer to be be raising rather than calling with ATs. That said, it seems like the CO is going to be pushing a pretty wide range in this spot. Against a range that includes all pairs, most broadway and A6 , you’re a slight favorite. Drop it down to any ace and some weaker kings and you get to 60-40.

That said, you’re still facing two players behind who have a small but relevant chance of waking up with a hand that whoops you, and you still have a stack that, while shrinking, can be wielded effectively to steal blinds. If the blinds were a little bigger or there were some antes added to the pot, that might tip this to a call, but it feels like an unnecessary gamble as it stands.

What actually happened: You called and the raiser showed A5o. Your hand held up and you took down the pot.

Shove.

You beat his range and you cover him comfortably.

Actually, I mis-read avg stack as our stack. Call.

222 fold vote already, and nobody defined his/her calling range.

I’ve voted call, but ATs is the very bottom of my calling range. “really loosen up” interpreted by me as 44+ A6o+ A2s+ KT+ QTs+
I’ve not used pstove, but my guess is I’m favorite bi an acceptable number. I count with the positive side effect when my carefully observing opponents tighten their open shove ranges against my blind knowing I’m calling light.

I eyeballed it to 60-40, as well, but used that number to vote fold. If he has KJ and cripples you, will you be happy you made “the right play” but got knocked out?

I think there will be a better spot to get our money in, still plenty of time.

A few things:

We not sure whether this is a turbo (assume it is), if the blind level has just changed and how we know that the CO has “loosenen” up?

It makes a comment about “making our way to the final table”, but there is either 14 or 15 people left so we have to get past another 7 players before we cash.

I think this is an easy fold, without any more info I am not going to risk it here with 8BB+ against someone on the same stack rasiing into me.

Sure against a shorty or if its me in that spot its an easy decision.

but i think i would be folding and waiting to open the pot or a stronger hand.

I have to say my experience is mainly STT SNGs, so this might ne slightly off. If the range is slightly narrower than A6 / pair / broadway - say A10 / 44+ / QJ+ then we are basically dominated about 40% of the time (70:30), racing 25% of the time or slightly ahead (60:40) the other third of the tme.

I think minimum for me to call would be AQ / 99 or 1010s to call here. But thats quite a tight range.

the tricky part of this quiz, IMO, are two two players remaining. You are calling as opposed to pushing, meaning you already have 30% chance of losing (which is good), but you may be called by either the BB or SB, which will surely put you in a bad spot. The blinds are already high as they stand, but folding still seems the best option. AQ+, TT+ is a good range.

I fold. I might have pushed all-in if there were no action in front of me to pick up the blinds. With A-10s, I’m not looking for a fight, just to pick up the blinds. However, it’s a very close play, and I wouldn’t fault a caller. I would call with AJs and up, AQo and up, and pocket 9’s and up.

Maybe I misread the above graphic, but doesn’t he have you covered?? (2049 v 2000). I guess if I had the opportunity to be first in I’m shoving, but I don’t like calling off my stack with this hand.

Fold it.
Unnecessary gamble. My range for this call is pretty tight. 10s+ or AQ+.

Loosen up does not mean they can’t catch a hand. A10s is behind most pocket prs and dominated by AJ+. I’ll wait for a better spot and hope the BB calls and takes the villain out. My range would be 99+ and AK.

Fold. A/10 is a mediocre hand. You dont want to get pretty deep in a tourney and then call your whole stack with that….like staff said, if you call and hes got k/j and beats you, are you happy because you were right and were at the high end of expectations? Id rather not flip now regardless, and I certainly dont want to be the one calling my stack with mediocre holdings hoping he was stealing. Not without more info anyway.

is it just me or are you pretty short stacked here? you’ve got about 8-9 BB left in your stack, this seems like a good spot to try and double up to make a run at the final table.

ATs is a mediocre hand, but I think I gamble here. We’re the shorty right now, making it that much harder to play. We win and we’re going from a short stack to a big stack, probably making final table. If he really has loosened up as described, I think KetszeriCs’ range is about right, so I’m in reasonable shape against CO. If the blinds wake up with a hand, so be it.
