Straight on the river vs. check-raise, high stakes no limit cash

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: $200/$400 NL
Your image: Phil Ivey
Opponent’s image: Aggressive
Your hand: J♣T♥

This hand took place between Whitelime and Phil Ivey. You’ll be standing in for Ivey. Thanks to High Stakes Report for the hand history

The setup: Whitelime has already lost a few big pots in the session and might be slightly tilted. However, he’s aggressive and somewhat unpredictable. In this hand you raise it up 3x with JTo ahe he calls. The flop is:

4♣7♥9♥

He checks, you decide to lead out for $1,600 and he calls. The turn is K♠. You both check. The river brings the Q♥. Whitelime checks, you bet $4,400 and now he check-raises you to $18,800.

What’s your play?

That’s a pretty big check-raise and big check-raises on the river are very often big hands. Something is a little fishy in this hand though. If he has a flush, he would probably just bet out here since you checked behind on the turn. Going for the C/R is an just odd play with a big hand here.

I think it’s much more likely that he thinks you have nothing and he’s trying to take it away.

What actually happened: Ivey called and Whitelime showed T8o

It’s nice to tell our friends we have stolen a pot from Ivey with nothing. I think it’s what is happening here…maybe he has KQ…maybe he has pocket queens or kings…I’m conservative but I can’t fold a straight heads-up…

Call, and be fairly happy about it.

I agree that the check-raise seems odd here. Given the guy’s stack as well as his image, I think you might even consider value-raising the minimum here. If he overshoves, you can confidently fold, knowing he must have the flush. However, it’s kinda hard to imagine a hand flat-calling such a 3-bet that you can beat, and it would be a pretty risky bet, so I vote call.

staff called it exactly right. the check behind on the turn means it makes no sense for the villain to check raise the river, he cant count on us betting at it so he would lead for value if he hit the flush. looks exactly like what it was…a “you dont have anything and youre trying to bet me out” check raise. but actually, we do have something. easy call.

Heads up there is no way he is checking a flush on the river, I think this would be one of the easier calls you’ve ever made. I think the real question here is whether or not to raise…from the given action its fairly obvious to me, and apparently to a lot of you, that he doesn’t have our straight beat, why not raise and see if he will call with a set or maybe even two pair? While not likely its certainly a possibility, and if you’re confident you have him beat a raise seems like a good option.

Easiest call in the world.

Anything else is pretty bad IMO

Yea he almost definitely dose not have that flush. It still sucks though seeing that heart. It couldn’t have been one of the other 3 Queens in the deck people!? I mean, come on!

Of course you call…if somehow he did hit the flush (especially given the way he played it) you just barf a bit, ask yourself (again) why you play this game, and then move on. But you’re probably good here :)

One of the easier decisions, Call, not raise. If he has a flush then we say nh and move on

Given villan’s aggresive image, you would think TWO-PAIR or a SET would have either c/r you on the flop (very likely, imo good LAG opponents rarely slowplay, esp. on a board like this full of draws, and you are PHIL IVEY), or lead out strong on the turn. If he did have a set would he really c/r you on the river for value?

Hence after concluding the villan is not likely to have a strong enough hand to call your r/r on the river, save for the flush(ok its possible that he hit a K and thinks you have nothing)there is not a good enough risk vs return reward to r/r on the river.

Of course, if he did somehow played his 2p/set deceptively, albeit terribly, we would have lost some value, but hey, he had to pay the price in the end.

HE WOULD HAVE LED OUT ON THE RIVER IF HE HIT HIS FLUSH.. INSTA CALL!

I say raise, if he had the flush draw the would have bet the turn, the C/R on the river is a big bluff.
