Archive: Small blind play on the flop against a preflop raiser, no limit tournament

Game Type: Online Tournament, No Limit
Stage: 340 of 600 players remaining
Average stack: 6200
Your Hand: 9♥7♥
This quiz is taken from our archives. It’s actually the very first quiz we posted, back on August 8th, 2006. View the original here.
The Setup: Preflop, Player G limped and H raised to 3x the bb. You called from the SB, the BB folded and player G called. With $1000 in the middle, the flop hits:
2♦8♥5♠
Player H has been raising from the button and cutoff about half the time if it’s folded to him. You’ve built your stack by betting some made hands strong on every street. The action is to you.

This is a standard situation and i agree with staff: i like bet 450/500 here. If H calls probably we’ll have the free card on river but in fact i like to c-bet also on turn

Player H is very interested in this pot, he raised the cutoff who tried to “buy the button”…I wouldn’t have called preflop and I’m not interested in this pot with such a marginal hand. Maybe I’m too conservative but I avoid many many problems!

Check-fold to anything other than a small bet or if player G bets and H calls, as your implied odds are there.
You have a gutshot and 72K you dont need to lead at this and waste chips if one of the other two have a hand.

I think even getting involved in this hand was marginal at best. If the guy to your right is obviously making a lot of plays, I would opt to just pick them off with good hands. Getting involved here with 79s out of position is just not going to work out often enough to make it pos ev. What if you lead out, and then the button moves in on you. Now what? You pissed away some good chips in a really bad spot, against an aggressive opponent who looks like he knows how to exploit his stack and position. Wait a bit, pick up a good hand and punish him.

I think the staff’s play could work, its a standard and reasonable play, but I voted check-fold and thats exactly what I’d do. I like to work situations that look like I either have the best of it, or can take advantage of read/ position. We have nothing going for us here.

fold pre-flop. check-fold, but if i’m feeling lucky i may lead out 30/40% of the pot. i very weak hand i do’nt like to get involved with. throwing chips away

I’d probably fold that hand PF, but with that flop I will lead out. Short of really nailing it, this is about as good a flop as you can hope in this situation and I don’t think it is very easy on either remaining player to move in on us here - they have also each other to worry about.

I agree with Kaimano…….I’m not interested in this pot. I wouldn’t have called. But having called, I can’t for the life of me figure out why I would follow up a mistake with a mistake.

I’m all for playing a lot of hands, but you don’t call that raise preflop with 9-7 suited in the SB no matter how the raiser’s been playing. If the flop hits you you’re ok, but if not, you’re in the worst position. Now that you have played it though you have to lead out. I think you could get away with half the pot maybe even less. That flop didn’t hit anybody and if it did (and one of them re-raises) you’re getting away cheap. If they call, you’re in a decent position to help your hand on the turn. But they’ll probably fold. Just don’t play this hand in the SB with a raise in front of you ![]()

Why hero called in the first place is beyond me. But now that we’re in the situation, a c-bet is not unreasonable. It’s not what I’d do though. Check-fold.

Some of you need to get out more. Poker is not just about cards. It is situational.
If a player is a bit busy in the cut off/button you need to clip his wings a bit sometimes. Calling with any 2 cards here and then a lead out on a low flop that the villain likely missed can be very profitable and you need to slow the guy down a bit or he will attack your blinds too much. Chances are he will fold. If he calls you have outs, you can second barrell the turn or check and see what happens if you miss your draw. If he raises your flop bet then OK fold and try again soon, but you need to let him know he needs to look elsewhere for easy chips

I don’t like the lead into two players here, so I’d probably check/fold the flop。 If I was player G here and the SB checks to me, I’d be much willing more to lead with this hand

What we said then: I like leading out for a little more than half pot. This looks like a flop that could have hit the blinds, and you’re showing strength by leading out. If you get called, you have outs and a decent chance of improving your draw.
