Game type: No limit tournament 50+5, Full Tilt Poker
Stage of tourney: ITM
Your image: Tight
Opponent’s image: Aggressive, winning player
Your hand: A♦8♥
The setup: You’re down to just a few tables in the fifty fifty on Full Tilt when the following hand comes up. You’re in the small blind and the table folds to you.
You’ve been playing pretty tight, passing on a couple of chances to open from middle-late position. Your opponent has been aggressive and is a steady winner in MTTs. The rest of your table seems fairly tough.
You open from the SB for 3x and the BB shoves over top. You haven’t been involved in any BvB situations with him yet. What’s your play?

An aggressive player is going to have a pretty broad three betting range here, especially against a player he perceives as tight. While it would be nice to assume that your image will get you respect for a hand, it also puts the thought in the mind of a good player that their three bet has a better than average chance of working.
With nearly 20% of their stack in the middle after your raise, there’s good reason for them to after with a wide range. Against a range that includes any pair, any two broadway and any ace, you’re flipping. Against a player pushing 100%, you’re a 60-40 favorite. Chances are you’re somewhere in the middle, but with 10k added it’s hard to pass this up.
This hand came from our forums – check out the discussion there, if you’re interested.
What actually happened: You folded.

Whats the average stack? What position in the pack are you?
Have to know these to judge correctly.
If we say average/mid pack then I would have shoved and not raised I think, but seen as I did raise id fold this given no read. and wait for a better hand to gamble with.

If I fold I’m dominated by him for the rest of my tournament life. If I win this hand I’ll get great respect. I call and hope.

FWIW, there is about 50 players left and Hero is in 26th. Average stack is about 38k

Your strategy is ITM, Even though the information we have been given doesn’t really say if that has been accomplished yet. (It just says your down to just a few tables). So I’m going with the assumption that we’re on the bubble or a few players from it. Easy fold. There is a couple of factors why. First, you have no BvB experience with him. It could be a resteal but you have nothing to base it on. If he had done this the last 5 times I’d have called by the third. Second, he’s a proven winning MTT player. So even though he could do this most likely with any two cards, for the first go round I’d give him credit for a hand, especially since his stack doesnt really warrant a gamble with A7 and less. I’d have to put him on 55-TT AT AJ maybe even AQ. With all of these your at best a 2-1 dog.

Okay so the last 2 quizes I had to disagree with. same here. if you’ve yet to get into a BvB situation with this guy, why would you basically gamble with him. I’d fold here, save a bunch of chips and try it later with a little bit better of a hand. or see if he gets raised by the button or c.o how he reacts. If he 3 bets alot then it’s time to gamble cause it’s likely he’s putting you on a steal. Not all aggressive players take 3 betting likely. get a read and play accordingly

u still got good stack no use 2 play weak ace pick a beter hand 2 get ur chips in

if your going to play this hand at all, you have to raise call a shove. if hes an aggressive winning player this is pretty much a snap call to me.

i learned this lesson a long time ago. Dont raise a hand like this (BvB, late position, could be interpreted as a steal) unless youre willing to call a reraise. Personally I hate weak aces, and wouldnt want to risk much with it. Id flat call from the SB prefop, call a raise if he raises 3x-ish and play this hand all sneaky-like. You wanna keep an aggressive winning player off balance? -you dont raise 3x with a mediocre hand and fold to a reraise.
[Reply]
lol, it’s an easy fold because your on the fold?
Got, you guys are horrible.
On the bubble, good players are shoving like 70% of hands here in the BB, if not more, and we’re flipping vs. that range + we have a huge overlay on the call.
“Your strategy is ITM”
Play to cash, my friend, see how far that gets you.

oops, mean button in the first sentence, God in the 2nd.
carry on

I suck at life, meant bubble, not button, in the first sentence, you’re, and suck at naming my mistakes.
Carry on imo

” -you dont raise 3x with a mediocre hand and fold to a reraise.”
So you never try to steal blinds?
Or you never fold a mediocre hand to a resteal?
Not that I dislike your idea of mixing it up and completing preflop. Migth even limp-raise, being out of position. But you are saying that you should never just try to pick up blinds, and that is the opposite of what everyone else tells me.
For the given scenario it is pretty close imo. We are not told if we have any blind vs blind history. Remember, raising from SB is raising out of position, and should look more creepy than a Btn raise – or is that nonsense?
Anyway, it could be a call quite often, especially being told that the table is tough, but I am mr deadmoney tigth-fish and voted fold with the little info given.

he probably has A8 just differnet suits. J/K. LOL.
