Small boat versus preflop three bettor, no limit cash

Game type: 1/2 No Limit Cash on Poker Stars
Your image: LAG
Opponent’s image: A little fed up
Your hand: 9♦9♥
The setup: You’ve been very aggressive in late position preflop so far at this table. While your stack has floated up and down, you’ve won your money by picking up a lot of pots and lost it on some nasty drawouts. You’ve had a couple of confrontations with the BB.
This hand the table folds to you in the CO and you raise to 3x. The table folds to the BB, who makes it $26 to go. He has three bet you a couple of times and played relatively straightforward on the flop as far as you can tell. You call. The flop comes:
7♥7♦7♣
The BB checks. What’s your play?

I like the check, I think it was perfect as played. I mean you probably don’t feel too concerned about the jack on the river and you’re getting a good price at $44 to call. If he had something like AJ or KJ then i’d just feel unlucky, I think the call on the river is right everytime given the action.

Yes, well played by me.

tough spot - his 3 bet preflop then checked flop
tells me he’s got overs that didn’t hit, that you don’t want to let him draw to for free, or a pocket pair that will be hard to tell if it’s over or under yours (HU, you can 3 bet with almost all PPs).
I voted bet over half pot - I’ve got a hand and want to get my money in and prevent draws if they’re out there, in this case a likely 6 outer.

I definitely like checking the flop since villain can/should be checking his big pairs a good amount given the board texture. I also don’t think a flop bet will ever get him to jam worse really since nobody ever really folds a pair on these types of boards (omg we have a full house!). On the turn though, I’m definitely betting after he checks but checking again isn’t too terrible. I think at this point it’s pretty clear he’s giving up and we sort of just need to protect our equity in the pot against overcards. If he check/shoved the turn, well I’d probably throw up and end up calling since I can’t imagine him checking anything less than AA twice.

I voted a check on the flop. However when he checks to me on the turn i am making a bet at it, if he CR i might be inclined to call. I feel you need to protect your hand on the turn from overs that can beat you. That Jack did fall on the river and he could have had one. Why give your opponent a free card at beating you. Just my two cents…

I hate the check. You can absolutely count on an overcard hitting and then you won’t know what to do, probably will make a crying call (just like what happened) and you are lucky the jack didn’t hit him.
The staff analysis goes haywire. Yes you can expect him to get tricky here, but checking behind him when an overcard is likely to hit is not the way to take advantage of that. Bet small. Not toooooo small, maybe 40% of the pot. That’s how you push the “get tricky” button, then you can shove.

i think bet a little under half the pot to see where we stand and if he folds so be it. i wanna make sure he has to pay to see the turn because it looks like he has missed the flop. (and he doesn’t hav a 7 because he wouldn’t of raised with 7-x pre flop) if he does raise back i think we take a chance and shove.

There aren’t too many spots where I will check back in position TWICE in a hand. We both show strength preflop, then three 7s come out. We’re effectively both claiming a potential boat with the pre-flop action. Checking the flop is reasonable, checking the turn is not. If villian has a premium pair, they will want to get paid. We failed to give them the action they wanted on the flop and they are running out of streets to make money off their huge hand. The check on the turn tells us what we need to know…it’s time to bet for value. “But, checking the turn does produce a river bluff” you say. True. Perhaps by passive play we got an extra bet…who knows.

“because it looks like he has missed the flop.”
guys, people can check overpairs here you know. i mean QQ+ is the nuts on this board. as the 3-bettor i’d be checking here w/ pretty much my entire range unless villain was a huge station and we were deeper or something.
“(and he doesn’t hav a 7 because he wouldn’t of raised with 7-x pre flop)”
again not entirely true. 57/67/78/97/A7s are all decent hands to 3-bet against a guy that is opening really wide from the CO. obv 7x isn’t likely from a strictly combinatorics standpoint, but to take them out of his range because he 3-bet pre is a bad assumption in today’s games.

Obviously, a bet is in order. The hand we can make money from is A something or a pair lower than ours. If we bet over half the pot we might lose our customer. The problem with this hand is that except for folding nothing he does would rule out a hand better than ours. If hes got the nuts or a higher pair he would be just as likely to smooth call as raise in that situation. I would be careful with this hand and try to get through the hand cheaply. A smallish bet accomplishes the same thing a large bet does. If hes got nothing he’ll fold. If hes got a hand we can beat AK, AQ, AJ, underpair he would be more likely to call a small bet and if hes got us destroyed were gonna lose money and how aggressively we play the hand will determine how much. THe more aggressive the more money your going to lose. This is a hand you could go broke on. The good news is that we have position so I would probably check behind on the turn or call. If he makes a big bet on the river well have a decision to make but it shouldn’t be for all our chips.

I’d have bet. If he pushes back you know where you (probably) stand.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the BB decided to get tricky on this flop with a strong hand. He knows you’re aggressive, and he’s set you up for a trap by playing straightforward so far. He also might think you’re tilty since you’ve lost on drawouts.
I like the check. It keeps the pot small, maintains the value of your position and should force him to play a little more obviously on the turn.
The one problem with the check is that you’ll often end up spending more on the hand when you’re behind than you would if you bet and folded to a CR. I think that’s balanced by the value you pick up from inducing bluffs and the money you save when your bet is just called as opposed to raised on the flop, since you often have to make an additional river call when the hand plays out that way.
What actually happened: You checked. The turn brought an 8. The BB checked and you checked back. The river brought a jack. He fired $44 and you called. He showed KQs and you won the pot.
