Open ended straight draw out of position, 45 man SNG

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: 45 man NLHE Sit ‘n go, Full Tilt
Stage of tourney: Middle, 21/45 remain
Avg stack: ~2500
Your image: Tight
Opponent’s image: Goofy
Your hand: J♣T♣

The setup: You’ve been quiet in this 45 man SNG. Your opponent has been playing an unconventional game, limping a lot of pots and making small leadson the flop. You’ve seen him limp weak UTG twice so far.

This hand, he limps UTG again and the table folds to you. You check and flop open ended plus a backdoor flush draw:

9♦Q♠3♣

You haven’t been involved in a direct confrontation with this player yet. What’s your line with this draw?

The only move I really don’t like here is the check raise. I’d like that if we were in position obviously because It gives us much more power on the turn. And of course, with a draw we’re happy to take down the pot at any time.

Of the remaining two options, I like leading the best. It gives us a little more information about their hand when they respond. They probably won’t raise and if they do, they probably won’t raise much. That way we can call with good odds and not necessarily give away our draw.

Check calling isn’t terrible either because they are likely to bet small based on their passive image. The think I like about this line is that a King is such a great turn card. The problem is that it’s a little more obvious that you’re on a draw and your hand is the only real draw out there. Weak players don’t always care about this though.

What actually happened: You led for 150 and UTG min raised. You re-raised and they folded.

Lead at it.

If hes the kind of min bet min raise player (I dont understand why people play like this, as they are just begging you to draw out on them!)then you can easily get rid of him by aggressive betting, and you can always make your draw and try and trap.

we should have a read on what the opponent does when raised…if he’s passive as he is in leading I would go for a check-raise…otherwise we are out of position and a check-call could be interesting…we are representing something like KQ…

I voted lead, but then read everything. Seems to me the best line would be check raise and here’s why. This player has been limping and small betting. Why would they change that approach now? So, a check raise here looks like a smart player getting the weak player to put in an extra bet before trying to take it down. Now, I suppose we have to assume the limp/min better is paying enough attention to reach that conclusion, but it just feels like a stronger line (and one that nets an extra bet from mid-pair type hands likely to fold).

I very much agree with staff about CR - never forget that even bad players get dealt good hands every now and then. It is true that there is a good chance to take the pot down straight away with check-raise, but what if he repops to the tune of 2/3 of the pot? You can’t call and you can’t shove, and you’ll be kicking yourself because you just laid down a hand with 8 outs to stack your opponent with if you hit.

I would be really torn between check-call and lead.. I agree that against a strong player check-call would really give the hand away, but precisely as the staff said, bad players are seldom deterred by that.

Lead out pot to represent the queen (to a weak player this will be their first thought). If you are raised small, call. If you hit the turn, great, if not be prepared to give up the hand.
