Game type: 500/1000 no limit online, Full Tilt Poker
Your image: You’re Phil Ivey
Opponent’s image: Has been playing very strong and hitting a good amount
Your hand: 3♥2♥
This hand is based on actual game play in the 500/1000 no limit HU match between Phil Ivey and seda1. You’ll be standing in for Ivey. Thanks to highstakesreport.com for the hand history.
The setup: You’ve been making a comeback against this fairly tough opponent, who has been making some hands against you and playing them well, when the following hand comes up.
You’re dealt a suited 32 in the BB. Your opponent raises to $3k preflop and you call. You flop a gutshot:
T♠5♥A♦
You check and seda bets 4k into 6k. You call and miss the turn:
8♠
You check and seda checks back. You make your wheel on the river with the 4♣. You lead for 12k into 14k and seda minimum raises you to 24k. What’s your play?

Seda’s line to this point suggests a mediocre made hand that’s looking to extract relatively thin value. You probably wouldn’t be surprised if he turned over a weak ace or a rivered two pair. If he had a very strong hand, you’d expect a bit more pot building / protect betting on the turn. Making this river raise with complete air, while certainly not impossible, is not nearly as probable as making it with a medium strength hand.
After you call, there’s 62k in the middle. I think you need a raise that gives your opponent a good price but is also large enough that it plants a little doubt in the back of their mind. Putting another 50k or so on top ought to accomplish that, and I imagine that you’ll get looked up fairly often- plus, it’s large enough that you don’t miss out on a ton of value when seda actually has a very strong hand he’d be willing to call more with.
What actually happened: Ivey raised to 64k and seda called. Ivey showed the straight and seda mucked.

6s7s would’ve broken your heart huh?

I don’t disagree with the Staff Analysis, but I might consider only min-raising or raising by 25K or so here. I’m worried that raising 50K pushes out the opponent who might otherwise call. After all he certainly sees the straight draws on the board.
