Missed AK in position, chipleader in a turbo SNG

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: $33 Turbo SNG, Full Tilt
Stage of tourney: Middle, 7 remain
Avg stack: ~2k
Your image: Pretty tight
Opponent’s image: Loose and splashy
Your hand: A♦K♠

The setup: You’ve made your double up in this SNG with KK a few orbits ago and you’ve been playing pretty tight since. This hand you get AK on the CO and the table folds to you. You decide to make a standard 3x raise and everyone folds to the BB.

The BB has been pretty splashy since picking up a stack and doesn’t seem very interested in protecting it. You whiff the flop:

T♠9♦9♥

The BB checks. What’s your play?

I’m leading out here… granted, villain can have any 2 decent cards but I’m gonna take a chance he doesn’t have the 9, and figure if he had the 10 he would protect it. Fortune favors the bold, and the he who bets into the pot has a greater chance of taking it down.

Ridicoulus options.

“Bet small”, “Bet large”, way to relative.

I bet 400, I called it bet small as it is less than 2/3 pot. I agree that playing the chippie is not always smart, but I hate giving it up like for nothing. I migth have voted check anyway if I had payed more attention and noticed his big stack, but that is not a great solution anyway.

I voted bet large, but I was assuming that would be about 400 like drhoho.

I would take a stab, as if you check I think youve lost it there and then. Then again, you missed so maybe a check is the right play. Id still bet though :)

I voted bet large, meaning around 400-500.

Im not just giving up to a loose-splashy big stack who is handing me this pot… he checks, i bet, he folds. if he calls or raises, well then i surrender.

I think you have one BIG thing to gain here besides the chips… let your loose splashy opponent think your weak and he can bully you off.

That table image in this case is adding a bit of value to me… If he calls and i have to get out of this hand, i tighten up and bet the same way with the nuts in a few orbits and double again.

I can see either a fold or a small bet. I don’t really like a large bet here though.

The problem with a large bet is that you pretty much are taking a 9 out of your range of holdings, which gives the villain some opportunity to play back at you. Generally speaking, big bets on a paired flop don’t speak of strength.

I like a small bet here (300-400) because it is a plausible bet for many hands, which is what you want your continuation bets to look like.

A fold isn’t bad either, because based on the read, it doesn’t sound likely that the BB will fold to one bet, and you don’t want to play a big pot against this big stack.

check - why didn’t Mr Loose try to steal it ?

I voted bet large. I’d bet 2/3 to pot as a continuation bet. Chances your opponent has a 9, 10 or a pocket pair is slim. Most likely you have the best hand here. If you don’t you’ll soon find out. If you check a good player will lead out next requiring you to fold. I know everybody has their own style but if someone puts a feeler bet out with this flop I’ll immediately put you on a decision by re-raising you cause you most likely won’t bet if you have a 9 and I would think you want to protect that 10 from any overs coming.

You have to make the continuation bet for $400.
Checking is losing in this pot and our AK has a very good chance to be the best hand so why give it away?. We still have 2400 if called, plenty to see another day.

AK is a great hand when it hits but it isn’t squat when it misses. Especially on a flop that an opponent might reasonably have hit. Learn to let go.

Funny how several people said they would bet around $400 and some people called that “bet small” and some called it “bet large.” Maybe better descriptions of the options would help.

i’m leading out and folding to a decent raise, for many of the reasons already stated… i would, however, add that this is a turbo game… you’ve gotta play fast and hard if you’re really gonna win it — don’t let this one get away unless you’re sure the villain has you

A pair hits the flop and he checks? Thats worth a bet for sure. No free cards from me.

It’s impossible to answer this question.
There are just too many variables that cannot be conveyed with a written hypothetical.

There are players I would continuation-bet this against, there are players I would check this to- some of them, I would fold to a raise, some I would call and some I would reraise back.

Winning players win because of organic elements of the game that have very little to do with the actual game-play mechanics of the cards themselves.

Well, since the post stated that the opp was loose/splashy, I think we have enough info to make a reasonable decision. I like the check, coz that is a super drawy flop that the opp is likely to call a c-bet on. Then what do u do on the turn? Either keep pushing forward and gamble he’ll fold, or check and possibly put yourself to a tough decision on the river.

W/ that kinda flop, against a splashy player, it’s tough to put a solid read on him w/ a c-bet. I agree to conserve the chips and wait for a better spot.
