Daily Hand Quiz

Thanks to High Stakes Report for the hand history.

DailyHandQuiz

Game type: 200/400 NL Cash on Full Tilt Poker
Your image: Aggressive
Opponent’s image: A little spewey
Your hand: K♠Q♥

The setup: It’s early in this heads up match, but your opponent has already showed a tendency to push hands a little too hard, especially on the river. You’ve traded a few decent sized pots back and forth with no one really gaining the upper hand.

This hand, you raise to $1200 from the SB and your opponent three-bets to $4000. His three-betting frequency has been moderate. You call and flop strong:

Q♠J♠9♠

Your opponent leads for $5000. You flat call. The turn pairs the board with the J♥. Now your opponent leads for $12k.

What’s your play with top pair and the flush +gut draw?

I voted call. I cant fold a double draw at this prize, though the board is paired. Still raising seems a bit over the top.

I would probably have gone broke on the flop though.

I call. C’mon, Ten of Spades….

shouldn’t the title of this quiz be “straight flush draw” and not just “flush draw”?

Theres really no reason to raise. You’d fold out a bluff, and youre behind a jack, straight, flush, two pair, boat…hell, even a/q. With the draws you have though, and top pair 2nd kicker, (which may be ahead) you have to call and hope to improve. Youre in a tough spot if a blank hits and he pushes, but at least you gave yourself an opportunity to improve before deciding whether you want to put the rest in, and maybe he slows down if he misses or a scare card hits.

If you call $12,000 here you are pot-committed. Might as well shove and give your opponent the chance to make the mistake of calling not getting the right price with the ace of spades.

I can’t see folding. This is one of those spots where you might lose your stack. Your opponent isn’t really making a mistake by continuing to bluff. The only way you get him to make a mistake is him calling an all-in raise with a flush draw without the proper pot odds.
