Game type: Poker Stars Sunday Million NLHE Tournament
Stage of tourney: 13 of about 6400 remain
Avg stack: ~5 million
Your image: Quiet but not passive
Opponent’s image: Loose, donkish
Your hand: K♠10♠
This hand is taken from actual game play in the Poker Stars Sunday Million on November 4th, 2007. This hand took place between nickym998 and Pappiri. You’ll be standing in for nicky.
The setup: You’re down to the final two tables of the PS Sunday Million. The chip leader is on your table, and he’s been playing a very loose style, calling a lot of bets and making some wild raises. His Sharkscope has him at a -35% ROI in MTTs lifetime.
You’ve been fairly quiet, so you decide to open from UTG with your suited king. The table folds to the chipleader, who calls. The rest of the table folds. You flop a gutshot and an overcard:
5♣9♠J♥
You decide to go for a checkraise and instead, your opponent checks behind. The turn improves your draw with another spade: 3♠. There’s about 1.6 million in the middle. You need to lose 4 more players before you hit the final table. What’s your play with this draw?

I don’t generally like the check raise because maniacally aggressive and -35% ROI players are more likely to call any raise after investing almost 2M into the pot, except possibly an all in. If you make the all in move, you really pray that your opponent didn’t slow play a hand, or have a 9 or 5 because that is basically an insta call in this position.
I’m in favor of pot control until I get more information about my opponents holdings.. Leading weak is an obvious mistake, leading strong also doesn’t say much other then you want to now protect a hand that you didn’t want to protect on the flop, so you’re likely to get raised and have to let go.
I suggest check calling, peel off a card, if it’s a scare card (like an ace… lol) you can bluff at it… otherwise, let it go and hope your king high takes down the pot. You also show that you’re not raising with bs preflop and cement your image.

The critical thing to consider here are the chip stacks. That is WAY more important than the poker situation.
Being as you are one of the large stacks, the LAST thing you want to do is mess with another large stack at this point, no matter WHAT the cards are – those guys can take you out of the tourney!
There are 4 players I would get involved with at this table and this guy sure ain’t one of them. Check-fold. I would also check-fold pocket aces in this same situation.
And I sure wouldn’t be playing anything but premium hands under the gun.

I think lead strong is the best
In the real table, the river not helped, but a Lead Strong will may you win at a long time, coz you have the best draw here, and a Over Card (K).
