Cash, NL / Short

Second pair facing a massive river raise, high stakes cash

Thanks to HighStakesReport for the hand history.

Game type: 200/400 No Limit cash on Full Tilt Poker
Your image: You’ve lost a couple of frustrating pots to coolers and outdraws
Opponent’s image: Very aggressive with a wide range of hands, especially draws
Your hand: T♥T♠

This hand is taken from actual game play at the 200/400 NL holdem table at Full Tilt. This hand took place between Genius28 and Ugadabugada. You’ll be standing in for Genius28

The setup: You’ve taken a couple of tough beats in this heads up match and you’re down a good chunk of change, but you’ve been battling back over the last couple of dozen deals.

This hand, you’re dealt tens in the BB. The SB opens for 3x and you repop to $4,400. You’ve been three-betting with a fairly wide range, but not anything overly aggro. They flat call. you flop an overpair and a gut:

6♦9♠7♣

You check and your opponent bets $5,500 into about 9k. You flat call and the turn bricks with the 2♣. You decide to try for a turn checkraise, but your opponent checks behind. The river is the J♣, putting three clubs on the board.

You lead for $12k into about 20k. Your opponent thinks and then shoves. They have you covered by about 30k. What’s your play with tens?

Excellent Hand to look analyze, but I dont know why you want to put yourself in these difficult spots when you play so passively. He checked the flop and then just flat called, why not go for a checkraise right there. Your opponent might have called you with his straight draw on the flop, and on the turn you just shut him out.

Usually I sort of roll with the punches when I see how the hero played, and go straight for the “ok, but so now, we’re in the current situation, what do we do” answer. But in this one I cant help but be hung up on the turn check. This makes our lives SO much more difficult then it needs to be. Weve been playing aggressive, we have what is most likely the best hand and we’re sure to get a call, why arent we betting? All weve done is give our opponent a potential free card, and invite him to apply pressure to our mediocre holdings. Now we face a huge river bet and we dont know if hes bluffing because he smells weakness or he’s sucker betting us after trapping or catching because he figures we’ll fold to any decent raise anyway. I dont think you can call now. Thats too much money to put on one pair…not even top pair. We lost this hand on the turn. Of course, Genius28 is probably a better player then I am, he called and won a huge amount of money, so what do I know….

flat-calling the flop was suicide - just asking for an overcard to take you out of the pot - then when you are granted a miracle reprieve you check?

the hero misplayed this terribly and now is stuck with an ugly situation, one he should fold to most of the time

calling a large all-in raise with a 1 pair hand is for losers - I make a good living playing against players that will do that

onlinepokerincome says this every time he comments, “I make a good living playing against players that will do that”
It makes me laugh. Not that I don’t respect the man and his game, but its such general rules… I think in this situation its looks like a call. Besides, I’m super paid regardless… so thats a chump change bet to me.

Either way… looks fairly obvious to me you got this fool beat, but I agree with everyone here, that you backed yourself into a tough decision that never had to be. The hand was misplayed completely, and you should have taken it down on the flop. With the turn, the river, and the overbet it was just sheer luck that the 10s were still good.

People who say they make a living at poker, particularly those with credible web sites, are usually telling the truth.
I called.

Yeah but onlinepokerincome should really know how to play proper poker before telling others (especially pros) how to play……..
