Daily Hand Quiz

Game type: Poker Stars Sunday Million NLHE tournament
Stage of tourney: Final table
Avg stack: ~16 million
Your image: You were the chip leader for a long time, but a critical pair of hands recently knocked you down
Opponent’s image: Running hot
Your hand: K♠T♥

This hand is taken from actual game play at the final table of the Poker Stars Sunday Million on October 14th, 2007. This hand took place between McNAbb2 and ClubbedBoat. You’ll be standing in for McNAbb2.

The setup: You’ve made it to the final three of the PS Sunday Million. The payouts are 183k for first, 95k for second, and 68k for third.

You were chip leader but you just lost two back to back races to fall to short stack. There hadn’t been much talk of a deal until the button took over the lead, but now all of you have agreed to run the chip numbers.

However, support doesn’t pause the game in time to stop you from posting your BB. The button folds, and support appears in chat and announces that they will pause the game after this hand. The SB thinks for a bit and then puts you all in.

What’s your play with k 10o?

Less than 3rd place money??? That doesn’t make any sense. Isn’t this formula used when calculating deals:

d(p) = (c(p) / c) * (t – (m * n)) + m

d(p) = deal amount for player p
c(p) = chip count of player p
c = total chips in play
t = total prize pool
m = minimum guaranteed payout (scheduled payout of the next player to bust)
n = number of players remaining

Which means our hero would get 85k if Pokerstars keeps 30k.

It seems like villain is pushing a lot of hands here so I’d say you’re at least 55% favorite which makes this a call.

You fold here. You are getting losing about 20k here if you make this call and lose. If a deal has been agreed on ygr small blind should of just folded. Its called honor! The sb is one greedy sob. But I guess you have to be in this game. Very interesting situation but no way am I calling since I’m getting more then 3rd place not less.

Any deal would leave a 30k side pot to be fight for after the deal is made. You are getting slightly less money than your share and if folded you would be in a difficult situation to be able to have a shot to those 30k..
Likewise.KJo has a positive expectation against villain hands(close though)and if win I would be in a great position to make a deal and, whatsmore,to fight for the big price.

CALL.

I voted fold, but I was mistaken.

Call and loose: -17k
Call and win: everyone will be allmost even, so on average you will take like 1/3 of the prizepool, + 25k.

If we agree that you are most likely to be in a coinflip situation as was the case, it is a close one imho.
But I am a wuss and didnt do the math before voting.

Calling is the best option.

if you chop your really not going to get much more $ i dont think then going out in 3rd. However if you win you can expect a huge increase in the chop.

calling is plus monetary EV so call.

Chop at this point gives you 48K. If you go for the chop and win the extra 30K you get 78K. So if you fold chop and still go out third or second you lost 20K. If you fold chop and win you get an extra 10K (third is 68K).

If you call and win you are all pretty much even and chop for 105K with 30K to the winner. So you call and take second or third you get 105K or win and take 135K.

You have to call with ATC at this point. Thank the chip leader for the opportunity to make a lot more money.

Or you can fold and refuse the chop. This will give you the opportunity to play it out with nothing to lose at this point.

Exactly – fold and refuse the chop. That’s the only effective counter-move.

I agree with Geronimo. The money you would chop would be the prize money remaining after you guarantee each player the 68k for 3rd place. Therefore you get 68k if you call and lose, and 88 k minimum with a shot at another 30k if you fold and chop. Easy fold. You could call and possibly win the hand getting you 110k, but lets think about it from villains perspective. Hes got a significant chip lead which will translate into 10′s of thousands of real dollars. If you fold and chop which he is willing to do, he doesnt gain that much, but if you wake up with a premium hand, he loses a ton and maybe you dont even want to chop after that. Is he really pushing with junk? Hes tempting you to bust yourself out and leave the real money to the two of them. (Mostly him especially after he wins your 10 million in chips)

Upon first glance, I’d say fold simply because there will be better spots than calling off 16BB with KTo, but it really seems to be more of a math problem. I tried to do some ICM calculations, but I wasn’t sure how to do it with the 30K left for the winner. I took it out of first at the beginning, but then I realized that the money could be taken out of second as well, and that this would probably skew the calculations a bit. Should it be 15K from both 2nd and 1st place money?
