Daily Hand Quiz

Thanks to HighStakesReport for the hand history.

Game type: 300 / 600 NL
Your image: Very aggressive
Opponent’s image: Very aggressive
Your hand: 9♠7♠

This hand is taken from actual game play at the 300/600 NL holdem table at Full Tilt. This hand took place between OMGClayAiken and Phil Ivey You’ll be standing in for OMGClayAiken

The setup: You’ve been getting killed by Ivey so far in this session. You’ve had a couple coolers and he just keeps pushing his hands. Here he raises to $1800 and you re-pop to $6600 with 97 of spades. The flop brings bottom two pair on an all diamond board:

9♦7♦A♦

What’s your play?

I would lead 1/2 pot to 3/4 pot in order to induce a raise from an aggresive player such as Ivey

The results shows exactly why you shouldnt slowplay bottom two pair on a flop like this

Agreed with above – Play bottom 2 pair fast, especially on coordinated board. On this flop, you don’t have to only worry about str8/flushes, but the A could pair and counterfeit you.

I voted half pot (also thinking I could induce a raise), but I don’t mind betting pot right here and taking this one down now.

I voted check only because against Ivey you can almost guarantee a check-raise situation. Given the check-bet, I would then have raised all in, in an attempt to take it down.

Just like Uberdonk, check-raise has a better chance to draw more money and represents a stronger hand, so if i get called I am done with the hand.
A check-call on the other hand is the worst possible play IMO

I agree with Cristiano. A check-call is imho the worst play.

But now for something completely different: Isn’t Ivy first to act after flop…???

I voted check because like you guys I am going to check-raise him off this hand.

That is, if I am first to act – I think the board is screwed up, button in the wrong place, quiz ruined.

I refuse to play as someone named “OMGClayAiken”, soooo fold?

I voted for a pot size bet because it didn’t offer a 3/4. Without knowing pre and post flop action we can only assujme right now we are the best hand. With a dangerous flop phil needs at least a 3-1 pot odds to call with a good diamiond by betting pot size (only offering 2-1) he can only call with a made hand. Lets take it now, don’t be cute against a strong player, to be bet out later.

Yah, button screwed up here. If I’m BB (and I presume I am from the way the action is called despite the diagram), I’m betting full pot because I just don’t want to see another diamond come out, and for some reason, it always does. Unless you want it to.. then it never pops.

im betting half pot cuz iveys raising me. check works too (as shown). then i come over the top allin.

iveys probably calling the pot bet anyway, but at least it would give him something to think about if i raised allin.

this is why you dont play ivey at cash tables. his bankroll is too big.

if youre gonna be playing against ivey, whos one of the best, and is super aggressive, AND hes gonna be filling gutshot draws on u and dodging bullets left and right….shit…gonna be a long day

“quiz ruined” – LOL

The correct play is CHECK-RAISE ALL-IN. Since Ivey has been very aggressive you let him bet then check raise all in. The only time you will get a call would be if Ivey has a flush or AK, AQ, AJ with one diamond.

If you like play this hand any other way, you should quit poker for good, even if you are the DHQ staff!!! lol

Hero was obv steaming. This is the only reasonable explonation to why he thought that slowplaying bottom two is a good idea on this board.
I would’ve gone for the c/r.
