Daily Hand Quiz

Game type: PokerStars Sunday Millions tournament
Stage of tourney: 15 of 6330 remain
Avg stack: ~4.2 million
Your image: You have been fairly active but you just had to lay down a hand in a fairly big pot to the chip leader on the flop
Opponent’s image: No real read
Your hand: A♥K♦

This hand is taken from actual game play in the Sunday Millions on 10/07/07. This hand took place between dh3684, JBruckie and jts11. You’ll be standing in for JBruckie in the CO.

The setup: You’re nearing the final table of the PokerStars Sunday Million when the following hand comes up. You’re dealt AK off suit on the CO. UTG folds and UTG +1 raises the minimum. The table folds to you and, still a little shaky from your recent loss, you decide to flat call. The button folds, the big stack in the SB calls and then the BB goes all in for about 1 million more. UTG +1 calls, you decide to just flat call again, and the SB exits.

The flop pulls the ol’ miss-hit on you:

Q♥T♥2♥

UTG +1 checks. It’s your action. There’s over 4 million in the middle, no side pot, and you both have more than that behind. What’s your play with this draw and one player all in?

I think a very large bet that shows you as pot commited but also trying to extract value is a better play than an allin. A bet like 2.85 million should suffice. If he just calls your bet you are allin on the turn and obv if he check raises allin you obv call. This seems pretty cut and dried to me, but it seems like a tough spot if you are a bit newer to tournament poker.

It is obviously check or all in here.

I voted check, but the all in looks just as good.

All-in definitly isn’t the wrong move in normal play.
But I disagree that eliminating a player is irrelevant here with 15 players left (we already have 3 desperate players on our table with an efficte M

hmm….. for any reason the rest of my message went to hell instead of the board. Too lazy to write it again.
Anyway: You know what I mean.

I think the real question here is: What happened pre-flop? I think if youre playing this to win, you don’t even find yourself in this position. UTG +1 raises min… youre shook, and you flat call. BB moves all in. UTG +1 calls.
This is when you push.

In reality though, why you don’t re-raise UTG +1 after his min. bet is beyond me… The whole “I’m still reeling from having to lay a hand down” is nonsense. No bad beat to shake your confidence, just a hand that you had to call it quits on, and you still got plenty of ammo. You laid it down. Now you have Big Slick in great position. Playing scared like that, you lost this hand before it even got to the flop.

and btw… I voted push on the flop… No matter what the dude is holding… you’re gonna still have outs. Worse case scenario: hes got the flush, you have 7 outs to hit. Best case scenario: You have 2 overs, 9 hearts and the J for a total of 17 outs…
Scared money don’t make money.

I think Ruckus has it right, you have so many outs, I think pushing is the move.

no pair with the nut flush and straight draws.
good not great. big slick is the hand which has the most to lose on a flop like this. don’t let the substantial number of outs obscure you to the fact that that number is still a minority of the unseen cards in the deck.
unlike our DHQ editors, I’m just not feeling like I’ve got the best hand on the flop. stands to reason one or both of my villians has a middle pair or maybe a set. they know that if I have a made hand like trips, I’m likely going to slow-play despite my pot-committed status. I’d rather check and appear strong than make a big raise or shove and effectively tell them I’m just on a draw. we know we’re not folding. this is a place where I like to play conservatively and live to fight another day if I have to.
I voted check —> the winning plurality’s view.

Everything about UTG+1′s behavior makes me think he has Ace-rag, suited broadway cards, or a medium PP. I’ve gotta think the chances of him having 2 hearts is pretty remote. Knowing what cards are out there, he really only could have raised with KJh. At this stage of the tourney, raising with K9h, or J8h is asking for trouble. The fact that he raised the min, then flat called the raise means that he would love to see a flop, but isn’t willing to commit too much – ie, he will release if he does not hit. Think of the sorts of hands that make you really want to see a flop, but not want action from all corners – 8s, 9s, 10s?

I voted to bet large for 2 reasons – 2 overs & mega draws = lots of outs if I get called or raised.
Plus, I seriously believe my opponent hates this board and has given up – he is waiting for me to bet.

I don’t hate the check, but for the reasons I mentioned I would be hesitant letting him see a free card on 4th st.
I think our hero played this one quite badly.

I would 100% move all-in on this flop

1. It appears our villian does not like the flop, so there is much folding equity if we push
2. You have already invested 1/6 of your stack, and 4million is a large boost to your current status
3. Even if you get called there is a massive amount of outs

Actually Steddy Rock, Don’t make the mistake of double counting your hearts. You actually Have 13 outs (K/J hearts already accounted for in your 9 hearts) Making you about a 52% favorite to make the hand… However, the push from the SB tells me that some of your outs may already be accounted for. Still, Even if you’re a slight dog here, you’re getting a great return on your money. Shove

You have up to 17 outs (3As, 3Ks, 4Js, and 1 ea of 3-9). If all of those outs are live, you’re ahead 60-40, and you may as well get your money in. As the staff says, if you wait until a brick hits, you’re behind. Even if you only have 12 outs (9 hearts + 3 more Js), you’re still at 45%, and shoving isn’t bad.

We need to shove now. If we check and the turn card doesn’t hit we have no choice to muck after opponent bet. If we want to play safe (since this is a very big tourney and if one player out we might get more money) check and muck if we didn’t hit the turn

By shoving we will makes mediocre hands to fold and even if we get called by a Queen, we still have so many outs. So We need to shove now.

Check call it down as played. Get the short stack out if possible. Why risk your tournament like here?
