Jacks on the bubble of a satellite, no limit tournament

This quiz submitted by DHQ user Aaron. Thanks, Aaron
Game type: No limit holdem satellite on Poker Stars
Stage of tourney: Absolute bubble
Avg stack: n/a
Your image: Waiting it out
Opponent’s image: n/a
Your hand: J♦J♣
The setup: You’re one person away from winning a seat to a larger tournament. The SB is all in after posting the ante (they had 560 to start), and after the next player goes out, everyone wins a seat.
You get Jacks UTG. What’s your play?

Umm, aren’t you the first one to act in this setup? We are UTG after all…
Is this the only table or are there more?
Because in that case I would’ve gone all-in since you won’t survive the blinds. But the question is incomplete.

How did I get down to just over 1 BB? Ack! Gotta go all-in. Hopefully, being as it is bubble time, it will hinder others from getting too crazy. I’m not worried about the SB.

Weird call, but a call nonetheless given the satellite circumstances. The staff laid out the scenarios perfectly. The goal at this point is not to accumulate chips, but to survive one more player, and whether we do that with 1 chip left or 10000 is irrelevant. The more players in a pot, the lower the winning percentage of each individual player is (there are exceptions to this, like 77 will be better off against AK and AK than it will against just 1 AK, but they’re rare), so the goal is to have as many players in the pot as possible. Calling best achieves that, and hopefully the other players will understand that and call along as well.
If someone puts us all-in, we have to call (unless we have an absolute read that they have an overpair), since the only scenario that we have to worry about is the one where the SB wins the main pot and the bigger stack wins the side pot. But more likely than not, everyone else will just fold or call, the SB will hopefully be sent packing, and we’ll have the next tournament to look forward to.

This is by far the easiest quiz to date. Anyone who would raise here does not want to win. Call all the way! Shoot everybody call. Sb is forced all in no need to isolate. Regular tourney I would raise since payouts are so top heavy you have play to win in This case just getting throw the bubble you all get paid the same. Congrats on getting the seat and good luck in bigger tourney.

Considering you are the big blind the next hand, u have to make this call. You probably will have another player or two also limp in wtihout raising. So, if another players wins the hand, u still get the last seat as u started this hand with more chips then the Small blind did. Easy no brainer call. You have to call because if the small blind wins this hand, it looks like u are still going to be the shortstack now, and you will now have to win one of your blinds to stay in the game. Jacks are a decent hand, u have to play.

Satellite Tournament: Smooth call is the right play, but if the SB wins the hand you are in big trouble.
Regular Tournament: This is an easy all-in, if you get beat hopefully the blind SB does also so you get the money spot since you started with more chips.

I honestly don’t understand what’s being described here. How on earth does the BB get eliminated here? And, there is no comment on the SB who you had covered. Does he win the main pot?
Has the BB already posted the blind and still has $6826?
Despite the confusion over the description, this is a call. And, anyone that bets after the flop is an idiot. Call it collusion; call it what you want. This is one of the most obvious spots to check it down ever. Everyone should cooperate to eliminate the shorter stack. How the BB gets it all in is beyond me.
You’re not looking to win here, you’re looking to get the seat.
And, even though calling and raising are almost the same thing, they aren’t. If you flat call and you see a flop and someone bets with an over on the board after the flop, you can release your hand to play one more hand.
Anyway, easy call.

obviously everybody who has the small blind covered plus one chip should call regardless of cards
altoough I can see throwing away some trash hands in the first few seats if all you have is a few chips more than the small blind and complete rags

EASY ALL IN, you are pretty much all in next hand, your jacks will VERY likely hold up against the BB’s random hand, and even if the large stack goes all in after you with AA, you get the seat as long as the BB doesn’t beat you.

This is one of the hardest quizzes I have tried to answer.
To analyze this we have to make some very bold assumptions.
1. If we fold: SB has 40% chance to not get eliminated.
If everyone folds he had 50% chance to win and if some one else calls he has ~30% to win.
2. If we fold and SB wins: we have 50% chance to survive the blinds or fold BB and let another player get eliminated.
3. If we fold and SB wins and we survive the blinds: we will win a seat.
That is, if we fold we have (0,4 * 0,5) = 20% chance to not get a seat.
4. If we make the call and lose: we will lose all of our chips.
The combined proberbillity of the chance someone will raise or our chances of winning if we were left with only 1305 fasing the blinds makes this assumption pritty strong.
5. If we calls, SB wins but we win the hand over the rest of the field: we will win a seat.
With >18000 we are well on our way.
6. From pokerstars homepage: “If two or more players are eliminated on the same hand, the player with more chips at the beginning of the hand is placed higher.”
Now, if we make the call, let us analyce two scenarios.
If no one calls.
SB has 20% chance to win over both of us (and he has too, to not lose). If SB wins, BB has 25% chance to win over us (and if he does - we are out).
That is, if we call and no one else calls, we have (0,2 * 0,25) = 5% chance to not get a seat.
If we call and someone else call(giving them some respect for a hand) SB would win 15% of the time and if he does we would lose 60% of of the time.
That is if we call and someone else calls, we have (0,15 * 0,6) = 9% chance to not get a seat.
As we see, this is a clear call(since calling marginally better that raising).

One thing i can say is folding is not the answer almost ever when you have pocket jacks pre-flop. that shortstack could really have anything. you have the 5th best hand in poker. i know the big stacks will call no matter what. The chances of me getting a better all in hand when im in the blind are very slim. i know that i have to beat at least 3 players. Im gettin pot odds. i got the right hand at the right time.JACKPOT. IM ALL IN. i would even tell ever one what i had when i pushed. just so they fold.

PUSH. Unless the SB wins the hand he will have gone out “before” you by virtue of having a smaller stack. 80% of your stack is going in on the next hand. How likely is it that you have a better hand than JJ?
9.20.07 / 12am
It’s really extremely simple:
-if everyone at the table understands sattelite bubble situations they know they should ALL call to make the SB’s chance of survival extremely small (1 in 10 and seeing you have JJ it will more likely be 1 in 15).
-if people don’t understand what’s happening you should probably still call and also call a raise and insult the raiser for being an idiot ![]()

“The more players in a pot, the lower the winning percentage of each individual player is (there are exceptions to this, like 77 will be better off against AK and AK than it will against just 1 AK, but they’re rare)”
I don’t think this exception claim applies to this (folding) situation. Having one AK fold is not the same as having one less AK dealt to begin with. In other words, if one AK folds, his cards aren’t shuffled back into the deck prior to the flop. (Though that might be an interesting way to play Holdem, rather like the different way to play Draw when you have more than 6 players.) A second AK staying in makes no difference except insofar as a flush is possible, but to that extent, yes, a second AK that’s live slightly reduces everyone else’s chance of winning, especially if it’s suited. (Not that suited AK is likely to be folded; but it might in such a tournament situation.)

If everybody gets a seat when the bubble breaks and the tournament stops, you should call as should everyone else at the table. Because even if the SB is sitting there with AA, he’ll still lose 2/3 of the time (at least if everyone checks it down to the river).
