Game type: 200/400 NL cash game
Your image: You’re Phil Ivey
Misc notes:
Your hand: Q♦Q♥
This hand is taken from actual game play at the 200/400 NL tables on Full Tilt. Thanks to High Stakes Report for the hand history. This hand took place between Phil Ivey and gaucho2121. You will be standing in for Phil Ivey
The setup: You’re near the start of a hotly contested 6 handed NL cash session. Being Phil Ivey, it’s a nicer site for you than for most when you’re dealt QQ on the button.
Preflop, the table folds to you and you make it 3x to go. The SB calls and the BB folds, and the flop doesn’t look too bad:
7♣8♠3♦
The SB checks and you bet about 2/3 pot, $2,000. The SB calls and the turn comes the 6c, for a board of:
7♣8♠3♦6♣
The SB checks and it’s your action. What’s your play?

I think you’re right there about giving a free card. Just check and pray that a brick hits. I’ve lost many a large pot by betting my overpairs on the turn with a coordinated low board.
As an aside, what was Goucho doing calling a 2/3 pot bet with an inside straight draw?

It is a pretty loose call but you call for the implied odds. If you hit that turn, you’re winning Phil Ivey’s entire bankroll because you know how aggressive he is.
I also voted check. This just reeks of a check-raise situation. If I could, I might just check down this hand, though I suspect he would bet on the river.

Bet the pot, the huge raise should have given his hand away.
Easy fold….unless I’ve been drinking.

WOW! i made the right choice before reading the vote remarks. Yippee Skippee…..tonight will be my lucky night at the Northern Poker League.

I think you raise here, but fold when it comes back to you after the check/raise.
On this board, you are either slightly ahead or you are way behind. And, if I’m ahead here, I want to charge my opponent to catch up.
A couple things:
1) You’re Phil Ivey. And, you could have raised from the button with almost any two cards, including T9, 98, 97, 87, 86, 76, 73, 77, 88, 33, 99+. And, you’re going to continuation bet that flop almost always whether or not you’ve connected. But, when checked to you on the turn, in most circumstances, I think you would slow down and check behind on any moderate holding. But, you would bet out with a monster or with total garbage. But, in this case, I think Phil needs to lead out with anything other than a hand where he himself is on the draw. He needs to “protect” his hand against the drawy board. If your villain has already connected, you’re bound to find out very soon and you can get away.
2. Your villain should know that Ivey may hold anything here from complete garbage to a huge hand. Therfore, I like his checkraise here when he’s got any kind of a hand. He could checkraise here as light as holding a single pair as the only hand that Ivey wouldn’t have bet is his own draw.
At the end of the day, I think this is still a raise by Ivey. If his villain here is on a draw, you don’t want to give a free card to beat your single pair. If your villain has any kind of a hand, you’ll find out soon enough and it won’t cost you a ton when he check/raises you and you should be able to drop your hand on that board.
Playing the way advised by DHQ, you’re still losing about the same amount by checking behind on the turn and then calling a pot sized river bet.
By taking a stab here, the worst that could happen is your opponent just flat calls again and then bets out a blank on the river which you would have to call.
Checking behind isn’t a terrible play and it does help with pot control, but I think you are leaving a lot of value on the table to not charge those that are behind you.

Checking behind is the best play. Forget about protecting your hand. Protecting your stack is more important.

Let’s see, the last time I was in an $80,000 hand, I…oh wait…

i would bet again to represent the straight. i wouldn’t wanna look afraid of the pot so this guy don’t push me around. its not easy to put some one on small cards after raising 3 times the blind. i know it is possible that he hit but its also possible that i hit cuz im phil ivey. so i would bet again and fold to a large reraise.
