Game type: $50 NL tournament, one rebuy and one add on
Your image: Tight
Stage of tourney: First hour, still before the add on
Avg stack: About 3800
Misc notes:
Your hand: 8♣6♦
The Setup: You’re in the first hour of a multi with about 200 players. The tournament offers one rebuy and one add on. You have already taken your rebuy. About 10 minutes ago you handed the tournament off to a friend while you ran out to get cigarettes. You come back just as the following hand takes place:
UTG +1 limps and the table folds around to the SB, who calls. Your pal checks in the BB. The flop comes:
3♥9♦2♥
The SB checks, your friend checks and UTG +1 leads out for 200. The SB folds and, to your surprise, your friend thinks a bit. You’re about to tell him to fold when he grabs the slider and makes a check raise to 900.

First, stop smoking, you’ll avoid putting yourself in that kind of situation !! (I actually shouldn’t say anything as I’m an ashamed smoker…)
Anyway, If the small blind made this move, I could understand, but an UTG limp usually means small or medium pocket pair or suited connectors. So, if he has so, he might have caught the set or the flush draw, and even if he has not, the board isn’t excactly scary for pocket 7s. Plus, rebuy is still possible.
The only thing that can save you is your tight image (well, it was before the cigarettes, maybe your friend kept on raising with trash since you left !), but in the overall, I don’t think the bluff could work. So, I go with the Jamie Gold sentence !

Further proof that smoking isn’t good for you. With friends like that…

It’s not so much that this play doesn’t work often, it will often work. The problem is you have pretty much 0 outs and you are investing 900 for a chance to win 500. Even in random hand moves to steal the blinds preflop have some chance to win if called. Here you must take the hand down now, and you need about 64% success to just break even. At best this is a high risk slightly +EV play.

I voted the Jaime Gold sentence but I would also probably smack him in the back of the head just for fun.
Then I would probably give him back the mouse and let him play a little more… he would just get me to about average stack with a good weakness read.
