Daily Hand Quiz

Game Type: Shorthanded No Limit
Your Image: You just sat down at the table
Your Hand: A♠K♦

The Setup: Preflop, Player A called and you limped with your AK. The SB called, the BB raised to $30 total and Player A called. The SB folded and you called, making the pot $100. Now the flop hits, and it hits you about as hard as it can:

K♣K♠3♣.

The BB checks as does Player A. What’s your play?

I check, hoping that the pf raiser is slowplaying a king, or that he will hit on the turn. I worry that a bet will end the hand right there.

I want to put some kind of bet out there with a flush draw; enough to make them wrong in calling, and make me a nice profit if it misses the turn or boats me (ace of clubs, paired turn/river)

We mustnt have any ilussions och think someone would call without a king! That is not some flop there one can slowplay or bet weakly in hope that someone would be trappt! People are afraid of open pairs on the flop and they would fold if you bet only 10 in case they have absolute no chances and can only be trappt. There is a flush draw there which one must not forget – there are players who would get all their chips on a paired board if flush comes. So we can either slowplay or bet weakly – we have not absolute nutts. The absolute nuts have one with two aces if two aces comes on the board.Next best are my four kings if one king comes on the board. After that a full house if an ace or two comes.Just now the best hand has someone who mayby limped with K,3 suited or 3.3. Chances are not too big thay someone has one of theese hands but one cannot say att this is impossible!Preflop raiser can also have two aces and wait for the third. All this means we cannot slowplay or bet weak. We must bet the pot ( 100 ) to see where we are. We mustnt be afraid of that BB raised with K,3 but its not imposible that some of two limpers has temporary nuts ( K,3 ).If some of them has K,3 he would just a call our raise – he wouldnt reraise and drive us out! Then can we only check and fold and save our stack. If both of limpers fold but BB call that can mean he has either the same hand ( A,K ) or A,A; Q,Q;and thinks that we bluff. Thats why we must bet the turn also ( pottbet ) to unable his eventual chase of the third ace in case he has A;A and force him to fold.Best regards! Boris

Since I almost always attack flops like this with air (and take it down very-very often), if I play with regulars I have to bet this one too. Who knows Player ‘A’ could call with a PP bigger than 3.
However if I play with unknowns I’d check hoping either that the turn card hits one of them, or that they will perceive my turn bet as a likely steal attempt and play back.

You know what, I finished right befroe you did (shirtville) and it crossed my mind that I finished in the top 5% and that’s pretty damned good. It also crossed my mind that I’m totally pissed I played that long, that patiently and didn’t fare a little better. In my opinion, it’s ok to recognize that you played pretty well and still be pissed that you didn’t finish higher. That’s how I feel and I don’t see the need to reconcile the two.Well played at any rate.
